John Brandon Smith (1848-1884) Waterfalls a pair, each signed and dated 'J. B. Smith/1878', oil on canvas 45.5 x 35.5cm (2) Condition Report: Framed: 57 x 46cm Surface dirt and craquelure to both. The painting with a bridge has an L-shaped tear to the lower right. Small scattered losses. There is cracking in the upper right corner with larger losses and the potential for flaking. The second painting has been cut along the left edge and the canvas has undulations. There is a possible repair to the rock, centre left, where retouching is visible. There is a small tear in the lower left corner with a minor loss to the centre of the lower edge. Not examined under UV light, for a full report please contact the department.

Much of the material in the thirteen books, pamphlets, and chronicles published under John Smith's name came from the writings of Richard Hakluyt, Samuel Purchas, Henry Mainwaring, or fellow officers of the Virginia Company, though Smith's hand as editor, compiler, and propagandist is evident throughout. Virtually all of these writings relate to the colonization of America, and includes Smith's A true relation of such occurrences and accidents of noate as hath hapned in Virginia (1608), A Map of Virginia: with a description of the countrey, the commodities, people, government and religion (1612), and The Generall Historie of Virginia (1624).
