JOHN SMITH (1735-1841) Kentucky Pioneer document

      Est: $400 - $600

[KENTUCKY PIONEER] (COLONIAL) JOHN SMITH (1735-1841) Kentucky Pioneer. One of the first to play an important role in the activities in the Mill Creek region. He is said to have served under George Washington during the French & Indian War, and is said to have been under Braddock in the battle for Fort DuQuesne July 9, 1755. His son James, is said to have been captured by Indians and held for 7 years. Both were experienced woodsmen in Virginia and are reported as being acquainted with Daniel & Squire Boone. The Indian attacks on the settlers reached a peak about 1786, the year in which Capt. Lincoln [Abraham Lincoln's grandfather] was killed. Their depredations resulted in the settlers, led by Capt. John Floyd & John Smith, organizing and arming a group to combat them, which was known as the "Salt River Tigers." DS, Hardin County [Ky], 1812, judgment for unpaid debt. 1 page, folio. Signed by Ben Helm. Terry Thorp, Alexander Leshly are to appear. Ben Helm signs again on verso along with John Smith and Jas. Johnston. Remarkable assemblage of frontier names. About 7-1/2 x 6 in. Excellent condition.
