Jessie Willcox Smith (American, 1863-1935) Happy Christmas to All, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas interior book illustration, 1912 Watercolor and ink on board 7-1/2 x 28-3/4 inches (19.1 x 73.0 cm) (image) Signed lower left: Jessie Willcox Smith PROVENANCE: The artist; Henrietta Cozens; William Gribbell, acquired from the above; John Gribbell III, gift from the above, December 25, 1940; By descent to the present owner. LITERATURE: C.C. Moore, 'Twas the Night before Christmas, Boston, Massachusetts, 1912, pp. 12-13, illustrated. Heritage is pleased to offer, for the first time at auction, "'Twas the Night before Christmas," by Jessie Willcox Smith. Part of a private collection for almost 60 years, the imagery by Smith in this iconic story shaped our modern views of Christmas in America. While studying at Drexel under renown illustrator, Howard Pyle, artist Jessie Willcox Smith met fellow artists, Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley. The three women, equal in talent in many ways, shared other mutual interest and immediately formed a bond outside of the classroom. They arranged to all live and work together by renting a small inn in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The trio dubbed themselves "The Red Rose Girls," after the Red Rose Inn, where they lived. Contemporary artist Anna Lea Merritt also chimed in, stating in Lippincott's Magazine, that "The chief obstacle to a woman's success is that she can never have a wife... It is exceedingly difficult to be an artist without this time-saving help." (from "A letter to artists, especially women artists," Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, v. 65, Jan- Jun, 1900, p. 463–469) Through this unique living arrangement, the women were able to successfully work and live with the help of another friend and close companion of Smith's, Ms. Henrietta Cozens. Pyle, a strong advocate of women artists, once famously quipped when a woman married, "that was the end of her." (A.A. Carter, The Red Rose Girls: An Uncommon Story of Art and Love, New York, 2000, p. 44) In this sense, Cozens took on all "spousal" duties for all three women artists living at the Red Rose Inn: cleaning, cooking, gardening, and any other chores around the house. One can surmise that the success of the group and the well-being of the women at the Inn was due, in part, to Cozens' loyalty and care. Although the Red Rose Girls eventually went their separate ways, Cozens and Smith continued to live together until Smith's death in 1935. Jessie Willcox Smith's art work appeared in magazines, books and calendars. Soon she was sought out to do illustrations for ads for Ivory Soap, Kodak and Quaker. Smith's art work appeared in such periodicals as Ladies Home Journal, Harper's, Century and Leslie's Weekly. She also did illustrations for Little Red Riding Hood, Heidi, and of course, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. HID01801242017

        Est: $25,000 - $40,000

Jessie Willcox Smith (American, 1863–1935) Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim Signed 'JESSE WILCOX SMITH.' bottom left, oil on paper laid down to board 27 1/2 x 19 1/4 in. (69.9 x 48.9cm) provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Acquired circa 1980. Sotheby's, New York, sale of December 1, 2004, lot 263. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Colorado. LITERATURE: Jessie Willcox Smith, Dickens's Children, New York, 1912, illustrated on the cover. Samuel McChord Crothers, The Children of Dickens, New York, 1925, illustrated on the cover and again p. 119. NOTE: Jessie Wilcox Smith is known for her illustrations of children. Her love for them, which led her into teaching, was evident in her work. She worked for most of the leading magazines of the day including Good Housekeeping, Century, Collier's, Scribner's, and Woman's Home Companion. She was a prolific book illustrator and preferred to work with charcoal, watercolor and gouache, while supplementing her income with commissioned oil portraits of children. Through her pictures of children, whether illustrations for fairy tales, or of simple domestic scenes, Smith changed and enlarged the appreciation of children in American popular culture by her enormously sympathetic portrayals. The present work is an illustration for the book by Samual McChord Crothers, The Children of Dickens, originally published in 1925. Bob Cratchit first appeared in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol as the victimized clerk of cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge. Timothy Cratchit, also known as Tiny Tim is Bob's youngest son, whose chronic disease forces him to walk with a crutch. His character is built as the antithesis of Scrooge's and serves as a representative of the impoverished, yet strong-hearted, lower class during the Victorian era. When visited by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Scrooge realizes that he must change his ways and pay Bob Cratchit more generously in order for Tim to survive, later becoming a second father to him.

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Jessie Willcox Smith (American, 1863-1935) Lucretia Signed 'Jessie Willcox Smith' bottom left, oil on canvas 50 x 40 1/4 in. (127 x 102.2cm) provenance: The Artist. A gift from the above. Dr. Joseph Fleitas, Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, New Jersey. EXHIBITED: "10th Exhibition of Contemporary American Oil Paintings," The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., March 1-August 1, 1926. "Memorial Exhibition of the Work of Jessie Willcox Smith," Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 14-April 12, 1936, no. 180. "Jessie Willcox Smith: For the Love of Children," Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 9-October 23, 1984. NOTE: Despite the many challenges she faced as a woman artist, Jessie Willcox Smith rose as one of the most commercially successful and highest paid illustrators of her time. Born in Philadelphia, she first embraced an academic path by training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins. After graduating in 1888, she followed her taste for illustrating art by landing a job within the advertising department of Ladies' Home, the first American all-women's magazine. Five years later, when she learned that famed illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was starting a School of Illustration at Drexel Institute, Smith applied and was accepted into the inaugural class along with Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966), Violet Oakley (1874-1961) and Elizabeth Shippen Green (1871-1954). Almost immediately, the three women became close friends. They later formed a partnership and for fifteen years were known as "The Red Rose Girls" - a nickname derived from the Villanova, PA inn where they collectively lived. Such a partnership may have been judged scandalous at a time when drawing was not a common profession for women, and was even considered unladylike. However, using their raw talent and wit, "The Red Rose Girls" and Jessie Willcox Smith in particular became successful by targeting an accepted, and very respectable artistic pursuit: that of children's books and family-oriented illustration. In that regard, Smith's work is reminiscent of that of Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), who shared the same appeal for intimate and candid depictions of children. The present work fits within this celebrated theme. It depicts Lucretia, the daughter of Jessie Willcox Smith's local doctor in Chestnut Hill, whom the artist thanked for his service through this portrait. For many years, Lucretia served as a symbol of what a healthy child would look like in the post-war years, and therefore appeared in several commercials from the 1930s, especially for milk and other dairy products.

Jessie Wilcox Smith Original Painting, this original painting features a young boy and trout, it is professionally framed and matted and is measured at 14.5 x 12 inches According to askart: "A pre-eminent illustrator and student of Howard Pyle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she was known for her Good Housekeeping magazine covers of which she did several hundred and for other children's story illustrations. She was educated at the School of Design for Women* and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts* in Philadelphia from 1885 to 1888, and in 1888, had her first illustrations published in St. Nicholas magazine. In 1894, she began study with Howard Pyle, who made illustration seem happy and easy, an attitude she welcomed after the what she perceived as the serious, moody, coldness of the atmosphere at the Pennsylvania Academy. Pyle teamed Smith with Violet Oakley to do colour chromolithographs* for Houghton Mifflin's edition of Longfellow's Evangeline.
