His approach reflects his love of the Dutch and Flemish Masters as well as the Japanese brushwork he studied in his youth. Smith's work has been shown extensively over the past 40 years at institutions including the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York, Fischer Fine Arts in London, England, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, British Columbia, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. His meticulous portraits, landscapes, and interiors are carefully planned and slowly developed, so fans of Smith's work can wait several years between exhibitions of new works. Smith's approach reflects his love of Dutch and Flemish Masters as well as the Japanese brushwork he studied in his youth. Highly detailed works such as Playground (1972-73) have been compared with the luminous clarity of Renaissance Flemish master Pieter Bruegel the Elder, while the virtuoso perspective of Early Morning, Kitchener (1988) recalls the landscape work of Vermeer. Smith's work has been shown extensively over the past 40 years at institutions including the Albright Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York, Fischer Fine Arts in London, England, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in British Columbia and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredricton, New Brunswick. His paintings and drawings have been collected by the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the London Regional Art Gallery, the Hamilton Art Gallery and by many private and corporate art lovers.

JEREMY SMITH, ARRIVAL, egg tempera on board, 36 ins x 47 ins; 90 cms x 117.5 cms

JEREMY SMITH ARRIVAL, egg tempera on board; signed 36 ins x 47 ins; 90 cms x 117.5 cms Provenance: Marlborough-Godard. Toronto. Joyner Canadian Fine Art, auction, May 23, 2000, Lot 114. Private Collection, Ontario. Literature: Paul Duval, High Realism in Canada, Toronto / Vancouver, 1974, pages 160-167 (chapter entitled Jeremy Smith) and pages 162-3, reproduced in colour. David Burnett (with foreward by Alex Colville), Jeremy Smith, Toronto & Oxford, 1988. Note: Painted in 1971-72. Duval writes that this painting "portrays the artist with his fiancée, Magda Seydegart, (now his wife) sitting on a wharf overlooking Lake Joseph in northern Ontario. The subject developed, he says 'because there was always someone arriving from across the water. The only way to reach the point we were at was by boat, yet in late August we were rarely alone.' Smith's compositions are very carefully designed, and Arrival is based on a series of basic triangular motifs, carefully repeated." Duval goes on to explain that like all of Smith's major works, "Arrival is painted on a heavy handmade paper board, glued on to either masonite panel or plywood. He paints in several layers, building up an initial coat in egg tempera, then drawing over it in sumi ink and finishing up with a second coat of egg tempera. Generally, he works from light to dark, and each small area of the painting is completed before he moves on to the next... In this way, Smith completed Arrival in just under six months."
