    RARE EARLY FIRE PUMPER - 1832 Classic New York Gooseneck Tub Pump Engine "Lady Washington", made by James Smith of New York for Engine Company No. 40 of Manhattan, name plate at front, maker's name on brass cap, with lateral hand pump lever in iron and red painted wood, a fancy mahogany and oak case with gilt molding and a pump tower decorated with hand painted panels, the curved back depicting Victory laying a wreath of thirteen stars on a bust of Washington between his tomb and an eagle, a smaller flat panel on the front depicts Pocahontas staying the hand of her father Powhatan from killing Capt. John Smith, brass hose rest and fittings, blue painted oak 30" & 24" wheels with large brass hubs and red pinstriping, iron runner's tree for four men with hand loops and brake, filling lid at back, tin lined interior (tub) tank. 76" tall, excluding tree, includes box of wrenches. 166" long, 53" axles, fully restored. E 40 (vol) organized in 1812 on Mulberry Street moved to Elm in 1830, disbanded 1843; reorganized at Crosby & Broome Sts in 1853, disbanded 1865. The legendary fireman Mose Humphreys was a member of this company, they appeared in Currier & Ives prints.
