              John Moyr Smith (British 1839-1912), three Mintons Eight-Inch Tiles from a series based on Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels, c.1878, Printed Moyr Smith, Printed underglaze in black, grey and a light yellowish brown with figurative scenes including: Fortunes of Nigel - Nigel & King James, Guy Mannering - Meg Merrilees and Hatteraick, and The Antiquary - Sir Arthur & Dovsterwivel; together with a Moyr Smith 'Isolt' six inch tile, copper mounted as a kettle stand; together with a Mintons eight inch tile, the design possibly by Dr Christopher Dresser (poor condition), Minton marks and printed design lozenge for 1871; and another underglaze printed tile depicting the four elements, design registration lozenge for 1881; together with a set of four Minton Hollins moulded majolica tiles forming a pattern, factory marks (restoration) 45 cm square when together; a pair of overglaze painted tiles with a quartered flower and leaf design, signed on reverse HSP&Co; two underglaze painted tiles, one with two females figures and the other two women in a punt, signed JHL monogram; and colourful underglaze printed tile, (15) Fortunes of Nigel - chip to bottom left corner. Moyr Smith 6 " - some surface wear. Some marks to copper. Possible Dresser tile = poor condition, Sprung, cracked with some losses, chips and wear. 4 elements tile - some small chips, crazing and wear. 4 Minton Hollins majolica tiles - some restoration, chips and crazing to glaze. HSP-One cracked at the corner. Painting faded and surfaces worn, some nicks to edges. 2 underglaze painted; both with some chips and crazing. last tile - some light wear.

              Three 19th c. Minton Blue & White Arts & Crafts Movement Fireplace Tiles. Two are by John Moyr Smith (1839-1912). Each 6"x6". Weight combined 2 pds 13 oz. John Moyr Smith was a major figure in the design reform movement whose work ranged from ironwork, furniture, pottery, wallpaper and lace curtains to carpets. The large number of designs he made for Minton included drawing on the metal plates for the following series of tiles: Shakespeare, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, Waverley, Thomson's Seasons, Old Testament, New Testament, Fairy Tales, The Trades, The Months, Anacreon, English History, Music and Sciences. The tiles he designed for Messrs Minton, Hollins and Co of Stoke included the Historical Series, Authors and Their Works, Shakespearean Songs and Nursery Rhymes.
