      • Signed Isaac Smith Painted Wood Bird Angel, 1980s
        Sep. 02, 2021

Signed Isaac Smith Painted Wood Bird Angel, 1980s

        Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Isaac Smith (American, 1944-2016). Untitled painted wooden bird angel, ca. 1980s. Signed "Isaac Smith" on the bottom. A wonderful carving of a bird-angel by self-taught, Louisiana-born artist Isaac Smith. The avian angel boasts large white paper mache wings, a sky blue hybrid bird-human female body, and an expressive visage comprised of wide-open blue eyes framed by white lashes and brows, a broad nose with red nostrils, and large ruby red lips, all crowned by a long, white coiffure. The bird angel stands on two feet embellished with red-painted toenails, her nude body with conical breasts culminating in red and pink nipples, and her hands, with red fingernails, covering her private parts. Size: 12.25" W x 14.875" H (31.1 cm x 37.8 cm) Isaac Smith is among the most prominent African-American visionary folk artists. As a child, Smith spent his days exploring the bayous and wildlife of his native Louisiana. When Smith was only 10 years old, he witnessed a man carving an unbroken chain out of a broomstick. Instantly hooked, he decided to carve one himself. In time, Smith's whittling evolved into carving sculptures, and he rendered animals as well as celestial beings like this angel for several decades. Isaac Smith's work has been collected by esteemed museums such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Houston Fine Art Museum, and The African-American Museum in Dallas.
