Henry Pember Smith Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1854 - d. 1907

(b Waterford, Connecticut 1854; d Asbury Park, New Jersey 1907) American painter. Henry Pember Smith is known for his highly realistic ocean and landscape views. Little is known about Smith’s early years, and it has been assumed that he was a self-taught painter. He began to exhibit in 1877 at the National Academy of Design, and continued to show his work there until 1896. He studied the Old Masters throughout Europe which is evident in his reliance on realism. He also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Club; the Boston Art Club; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; and the Art Institute in Chicago.

These also indicate his love of travel and some of his best known works are Venetian scenes. Working primarily in oils and watercolors, and using a tighter technique than the emerging impressionists of his time, Smith was a true realist.Around 1901, Smith moved to Asbury Park, New Jersey to seek relief from ill health and rheumatism. He died there in October, 1907.

This painting has been professionally restored with inpainting and repairs evident. Weighs approximately 20 pounds. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. This item must be picked up by buyer or requires the use of an outside shipper.
