    • George D. Smith Painting "Spirit of the Hoodoos" (1990)
      Nov. 01, 2024

George D. Smith Painting "Spirit of the Hoodoos" (1990)

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

George D. Smith (American, b. 1944). "Spirit of the Hoodoos" oil on board, 1990. Signed at lower right. A stunning landscape painting of sublime rock formations called "Hoodoos" at sunset in Upper Lamar, Wyoming by Western artist George D. Smith. For those unfamiliar with the term Hoodoos, Glenn Woods provides the following, "To the American Indian strange rock formations happened because of the presence of strange spirits. These areas were considered sacred ground and in some cases even left alone. When new people came across the land in covered wagons they asked the Indians what caused those strange formations. They were told 'strange spirits.' This made sense, and there was already a word for those strange spirits. Hoodoos." Masterfully rendered with Smith's remarkable sensitivity and mesmerizing palette, "Spirit of the Hoodoos" is mounted in a custom frame comprised that complements the composition perfectly. (source: Wake Up Wyoming with Glenn Woods) Size (sight view): 13.75" L x 8.75" W (34.9 cm x 22.2 cm) Size (frame): 19.875" L x 14.875" W (50.5 cm x 37.8 cm) About the artist: "George D. Smith was born in Cody, Wyoming on January 3, 1944. He attended Cody Public Schools and graduated with honors in 1968. He then entered Montana State University at Bozeman and received his degree in architecture. During his college years Dee became interested in art, in a short time he developed his talent for painting into a professional calling. As a boy, Dee spent his leisure time working with horses or hiking in the beautiful Absaroka wilderness. He has stated his belief that he was born a hundred years too late because the life of the mountain man and cowboy are his deepest yearning. His works are distinctive and versatile, ranging from vivid Native American portrayals to subtle landscapes. Dee studied under Adolph Sporer and Edward T. Greigware, and has been influenced by many other artists. The brilliant colors of Russell, the subtle colors of Koerner, the historical portraits of Remington, and the contemporary feeling of Wyeth are present in his work, and yet, his style is his own. Dee's works are displayed in prominent collections throughout the West, and have won local and regional professional competitions. George D. Smith paints a dying way of life with feeling and sensitivity."
