Artist Frank Vining Smith was born in Massachusetts in 1879. Smith is known as a cartoonist and maritime painter, but also as a passionate sailor, which gave him firsthand knowledge of the complexity of the ocean. Minute details of rigging and architecture of ships give Smith's paintings a vivid lifelike drama. Moving to New York as an adult, artist Frank Vining Smith secured his first job at McClure Newspaper Syndicate. Smith would frequent the Art Students League on his days off. In 1900, painter Frank Vining Smith moved to Boston to work at the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe, sketching advertisements and cartoons. Smith's maritime painting were for sale for the first time at Doll; Richards Gallery in Boston in 1928. Years later, in 2011, one of Smith's paintings, A Crew Manning Sail, sold in New York for over $32,000.
