Elmer Boyd Smith (American, 1860-1943) two watercolor on paper illustrations for the book STORY OF POCAHONTAS AND CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH, 1906. First painting depicts Captain Smith, kneeling on one knee and holding the hand of Pocahontas while Chief Powhatan and other Native Americans watch from a village in the background. Second painting depicts Pocahontas and her brother and fellow Native Americans delivering corn to John Smith's colony. Both paintings signed with initials lower left, framed and matted under glass in a molded narrow giltwood frame, and measuring sight: 9 3/4" H x 12 3/4"w; frame 21 1/2"H x 24 1/2"W. Note: Elmer Boyd Smith was raised in Boston where he worked for Riverside Press at an early age. He later studied drawing and painting in Paris, where he wrote and illustrated his first book, "My Village". He returned to Boston in 1898 where he illustrated books for Houghton Mifflin. A few years later, he traveled West to sketch cowboys and Native Americans. Smith's illustrations for books by Andy Adams ("Log Of A Cowboy") and Mary Austin ("Land Of Little Rain") helped establish his reputation as a western artist. His STORY OF POCAHONTAS AND CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH was published 1906 by Houghton Mifflin. Source: "American Picturebooks From Noah's Ark to The Beast Within" by Barbara Bader.

Elmer Boyd Smith (American, 1860-1943), "Auvers-sur-Oise (Mother and Child)", 1897, oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated lower right, inscribed with artist, title, date, "The Minneapolis Institute of Arts / Minneapolis, Minn. / Exhibited / November 1975" exhibition stamp and artist estate stamp on backing board, 17 in. x 22 1/8 in., framed. Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Note: Elmer Boyd Smith is best known as a writer and illustrator who created over seventy illustrated books for children and adults. Smith was born in New Brunswick, but educated in France. His first book, written in 1896, was titled “My Village” and recounts the citizens and events near Auvers-sur-Oise. The painting offered here was done a year later and clearly demonstrates the feeling with which Smith captured the people and landscape he came to know so well. In an impressionistic style, he depicts a mother and child gazing over a fence at cattle grazing in a field - an idyllic scene in warm tones that invites the viewer to spend time enjoying the pleasures of the French countryside.

        Est: $700 - $900

"Another Outline. Or the Strange Story of Dennis the O'Geoghegan," watercolor with pen and ink, 215 x 250 mm. Matted. Front cover design for an unpublished book. Provenance : Christie's East, Apr 20, 1994, lot 154. Smith spent several years studying art in France before finally settling in Wilton, Connecticut. "While living abroad, Smith absorbed a wide swath of influences ranging from the muted, mystery-laden palette and epic vision of French muralist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes to the dashing graphic shorthand of poster artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec ... Smith's first two children's picture books, The Story of Noah's Ark (1905) and The Story of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith (1906) immediately established him, alongside Howard Pyle and Jessie Willcox Smith, as one of America's leading illustrators for the young. He was well suited to the calling, thanks not only to his formidable skill as a draughtsman but also because of his genial storytelling manner and knack for conveying useful knowledge in a fresh, unforced, and delightful way" ( What Shall we Read to the Children: Treasures from the Hunt Collection , Brooklyn Public Library, online exhibition).

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

ELMER BOYD SMITH (Canadian-American, 1860-1943) Haycocks, Brittany, France, circa 1890s Oil on canvas laid on masonite 10 x 13 inches (25.4 x 33.0 cm) THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Chicago, Illinois, sale #565, June 3, 1981; Beacon Hill Fine Art, New York; Vose Galleries of Boston, Boston, Massachusetts; Sessions Hootsell American Paintings, Natchez, Mississippi (labels verso). Landscapes featuring flat newly-mown fields dotted with haystacks held particular appeal for collector Graham Williford, who grew up in Texas on his family's extensive ranchlands. He owned many examples of this motif, especially by Americans working in France, and the current auction features seven of them. This remarkable, nearly iridescent painting of two monumental haystacks is the work of Canadian-born artist, Elmer Boyd Smith, who was raised in Boston, and trained as a painter and draftsman in Paris at the Academie Julien in Paris under Boulanger and Lefebvre before eventually settling in Wilton, Connecticut. While living abroad, Smith absorbed a wide swath of influences ranging from the muted, mystery-laden palette and epic vision of French muralist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes to the dashing graphic shorthand of poster artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He based My Village (1896), the first of the more than seventy books he illustrated for adults and children, on his summer sojourns in the village of Valombre, near Paris. Like so many artists of his generation, Smith, being acutely aware of living in a time of breathtaking technological and social change, dedicated himself in part to documenting aspects of the everyday world that he knew to be on the verge of disappearing forever. Smith established himself as a book illustrator upon his return from France, working for the august Boston house, Houghton Mifflin. In early 1900, he went West sketching Indians and herders. Smith illustrated books by Andy Adams ("Log of a Cowboy") and Mary Austin ("Land of Little Rain") insuring his reputation as a western artist. Among the titles of children's books he both wrote and illustrated are: "The Story of Noah's Ark," "The Chicken World," and "Pocahontas and Captain John Smith."

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Elmer Boyd Smith American, 1860-1943 Haystacks in a Brittany Landscape Oil on canvas 15 x 21 inches Provenance: Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, MS Smith was born in St. John, in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, and grew up in Boston. From 1881 until 1897, he lived mostly in France, studying in Paris at the Académie Julian, and residing in the early 1890s in the tiny hamlet of Volombre. Here Smith captures the play of light on a quiet scene of haystacks and orderly homes, united visually by their red-pitched roofs. Both through the golden light that filters across the scene and the neat rows of buildings set against a lush landscape of fields and forests, Smith produced an iconic image of a tranquil French village at dawn.
