David (1906) Smith Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, b. 1906 - d. 1965

(b Decatur, Indiana 1906; d Bennington, Vermont 1965) American sculptor. David Smith is known for his massive geometric sculptures made of steel. As a young man Smith worked in an automotive shop welding metal, which would later come to influence his work. After attending Ohio University in 1924, Smith studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City. In the 1930s, in New York, he made the acquaintance of many prolific artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. It was at this time, in 1933, that Smith began working exclusively in metal for his sculptures. Smith had his first solo exhibition in 1938. A major retrospective of his work was organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1957. He also exhibited at the Venice and Sao Paulo Biennales in 1958 and 1959. In 1965, the year of his death, President Johnson appointed Smith to the National Council on the Arts.

Anthropomorphic figure "iginga", before 1937 - D. R. Congo, eastern Congo, Kivu & Maniema, Lega

              Est: €25,000 - €50,000

ivory, mounted on base [a work by the artist David Smith (1906-1965)] An object from the same workshop that entered the collections of the Barnes Foundation in 1922, published by Clarke, New York 2015, p. 267, cat. 64b (see also AHDRC 0126889). John D. Graham (1890-1961) was a prominent figure on the New York art scene in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote as early as 1936 about the influence of African sculpture and its formal language on artists of the Western world and introduced artists such as Jackson Pollock, David Smith, Adolph Gottlieb and others to African art. For Frank Crowninshield, Graham was able to assemble an entire collection of African sculpture, which became one of the first major private collections of African art in the United States and was featured in several exhibitions in the 1930s. The present object was shown in the exhibition "African Negro Art from the Collection Frank Crowninshield" as exhibit no. 23 at the Brooklyn Museum in New York from 20 March - 25 April 1937 (cf. photo in AHDRC under number 0025737). Crowninshield (1872-1947) himself was editor of Vanity Fair for two decades and then an advisor to Vogue. He was an important American taste-maker. In him, Graham had found a brother in spirit. Both contributed decisively to making African artefacts accessible and known to a wider audience. Graham also established the link between Crowninshield and his friend David Smith, who was commissioned to make plinths for the objects in the Crowninshield collection. The mounting of the Crowninshield collection probably began during the summer of 1933 and continued that fall. He chose dark, exotic woods, such as ebony, as the material. The social and spiritual life of the Lega is governed by the "bwami" society. Within the association there are five initiation levels, or societies, which every man must pass through in order to be considered a fully initiated member of the community in the teachings and traditions of the people. Each initiation society has its own objects and sculptures "isengo" (pl. "masengo") that serve to convey the teachings and moral concepts of "bwami". These include the small "iginga" ivory figurines. They are owned by the highest initiation level of the "bwami", the "kindi" society, and belong to members of "lutumbo lwa kindi". Of all the initiation objects, the Lega consider "maginga" to have the strongest innate power, and they often use bits of the material scraped from these figures to mix in a drink intended for medicinal purposes. Est: $25,000 - $40,000

David Smith (American, 1906-1965) Untitled (Chelsea Hotel Series) Signed, dated 60 and inscribed 'Ch' bottom right, also stamped with estate stamp and numbered ‘ACC.NO. 73-60.19’ verso, brown egg ink and oil on paper. (26 x 41 in. (66 x 104.1cm)) Provenance The Artist. The Estate of David Smith. Knoedler & Co., New York, New York. Makler Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Private Collection, Pennsylvania (acquired directly from the above in 1977). Footnote: Note This work is recorded by the Estate of David Smith as no. 7360.019. David Smith experimented throughout his career with painting and drawing techniques, as well as within the sculptural work for which he is best known. His later drawings, particularly from 1950 on, saw him referring back to early investigations in painting, incorporating a variety of materials and textures into his media, including egg, metal particles, dry pigments, glass, and other household materials. He also created drawings using spray paint on paper during this time, spraying pigment onto solid shapes like stencils, producing ethereal forms that seem to emerge as clouds. Untitled (Chelsea Hotel Series) was painted during this later, mature phase, while the artist was staying at the New York hotel, a well known hub for artists, musicians, writers, and other cultural figures. Linear and abstract, the composition is nevertheless full of movement and the play of positive and negatives spaces clearly refers to Smith’s sculptural work. The gestural nature of the drawing and its physical size were a focus for Smith at this time and he even commented on these aspects in a speech he gave in 1960: ‘I wish somebody had taught me to draw in proportion to my own size, to draw as freely and easily with the same movements as I dressed myself with, or that I ate with, or worked with in the factory... I think that the first thing that I should have been taught was to work on great big paper, big sizes, to utilize my natural movements.’ [1] Along with the gestural quality, the incorporation of peach, orange, and rust-colored tones concentrated on the left side also call to mind the artist's sculptural surfaces, especially his reference in his writing to rust connoting decay and deterioration, as well as being used to introduce color into metal works.[2] He clearly favored the color and texture of rust in his work, often using the language of rust and oxidation to describe his steel pieces. In Untitled (Chelsea Hotel Series) many elements of David Smith’s lifelong project come together in this drawing, a unique window into the artist’s working process.
