        • WAAC - This is my War Too Poster 1943 by Dan Smith - Original WWII
          Jun. 20, 2024

WAAC - This is my War Too Poster 1943 by Dan Smith - Original WWII

          Est: $600 - $1,000

"WAAC-This Is My War Too!" is a 1943 WWII recruitment poster that proudly features a patriotic servicewoman with the American flag by Dan Smith. The Women's Army Auxiliary Corps was founded in 1942 in order to supplement the stateside production for the armed forces. WAAC's initially served as switchboard operators, mechanics/arms repair, and bakers. Later positions expanded to office oriented assignments and drivers. The WAAC program encountered a strong critical reaction, painting the women as, at best, taking jobs from men, and, at worst, as lesbians or consorts to servicemen. This necessitated a wide promotional campaign, which sought to portray the women as patriotic and to show them involved in the war effort. Clothing designers produced outfits based on the WAAC uniform for commercial sale. About 150,000 American women served during World War II. The division lasted until 1978, when female service-members were integrated into their corresponding areas of the armed forces. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Dan Smith (1865- 1934) Oil Painting

          Est: $100 - $1,000

DESCRIPTION: Dan Smith (1865- 1934) Oil Painting created as design for magazine cover depicting an elegant amazona lady riding a horse in elegant 1920s fashion. Dan Smith was an illustrator of remarkable talent and distinctive style, whose work from the 1890s through the early 1930s earned him widespread recognition. Yet, as well-known and highly regarded as he was in his lifetime, he has since, like so many of the masterful practitioners from the Golden Age, become virtually forgotten. This may be due in large part to the circumstance that his greatest fame was in the ephemeral realm of newspaper illustration. While Smith created countless paintings, posters, book and magazine illustrations, and advertisements, he was most lauded for his decades of stunning covers for the Sunday supplements featured in many major papers of the day. As one of The World’s Sunday magazine’s most prolific illustrators for over twenty years, drawing nearly all of its covers, Smith became known to millions of readers in the United States, and, through syndication, the world. In addition to decorative images, Smith also illustrated sumptuous, serialized narrative stories, which he sometimes wrote as well. Smith also painted several World War I posters, was the official poster artist for the 1926. During his lifetime, Dan Smith was known not just for his brilliant illustrations, but also for his considerable work in oils and etchings. He was a long-standing member, artistic contributor, and officer of The Pleiades Club, a bohemian Greenwich Village association of artists, poets, authors, musicians, and bon vivants. Smith was devoted to his wife, Wilhelmina von Lowe, for whom he crafted elaborate hand-drawn valentines each year. The couple were known as stylish and dramatic figures in the artistic circles of Manhattan. CIRCA: 1920s. ORIGIN: USA. DIMENSIONS: H: 32" W: 25 1/4". CONDITION: Good condition. See lot description for details on item condition. More detailed condition requests can be obtained via email (info@akibaantiques.com) or SMS 305-332-9274. WAAC. ca. 1942.

          Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: DAN V. SMITH SIZE: 24 3/4 x 36 3/4 in./63 x 93.2 cm DESCRIPTION: The straight-backed, straight-up, picture-perfect American servicewoman of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps almost synaesthetically calls up archetypes of American patriotic extravaganzas. The WAAC was formed on May 15, 1942, and modeled after comparable British units. The first 800 members began basic training that year. After basic, WAAC troops were trained as switchboard operators, mechanics, armorers, seamstresses and bakers. In 1943, a physical training manual titled "You Must Be Fit" began with these words: "Your Job: To Replace Men. Be Ready To Take Over." (Propaganda; War; Americana)
