Charles Loraine Smith (British, 1751-1835) A Sunday Concert signed and dated lower right "C Loraine Smith 1782" and inscribed "A Sunday Concert" watercolour and ink h:33 w: 49 cm Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE The present scene depicts one of the informal concerts often held at Dr Charles Burney's London house in St Martin's Street. Featured in the company is Lady Mary Duncan, seated on the left; the great castrato Pacchierotti, and the Venetian composer Bertoni. In the foreground is Dr Burney talking to Miss Polly Wilkes, daughter of the politician John Wilkes. Only the solitary figure on the far right remains unidentified; possibly the instrument maker J J Merlin, the painter himself, or Burney's nephew Charles Rousseau Burney.

A set of 6 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Smith (241 x 328mm), window-mounted in oblong 2° album (435 x 575mm). Red half morocco gilt by Aquarius, red marbled edges. 'A VERY RARE SET ... the horses and landscape in their composition are most attractive,' states Siltzer who adds, 'Lorain Smith's horses impress one as being up to the mark - one would like to go hunting on them, and one would like to make a bow at the meet to this sportsman and painter'. The first plate, 'The Rendezvous of the Smoking Hunt at Braunstone', accounts for the hunt's name since three of the riders in the foreground are smoking cigars and another puffs at a huge pipe. The next scene, 'The Rendezvous of the Quorn Hounds at Grooby Pool', shows ladies riding side saddle. Wilder p. 117; Mellon/Smith 3; Siltzer pp. 250-256; Wilder p. 117, plate 46.

Early 20th-century frontispiece leaf with hand-coloured aquatint portrait of Dick Knight, three watercolour vignettes to each side and a fox's mask-and-brush design beneath. The complete set of 8 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Francis Jukes after Smith, each c. 247 x 265mm, mounted within gilt borders. (A few light spots on frontispiece, one plate with small tear.) Early 20th-century red morocco gilt, covers with double gilt rules, front cover titled in gilt: 'A Distinguished Character in the "Pytchely Hunt"', spine gilt, gilt turn-ins, red silk endleaves with gilt fox-mask cornerpieces, gilt edges (a few light scuffs). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 19 June 1939, lot 824). A FINE SET OF JUKES' AQUATINTS AFTER SMITH, which are, according to Siltzer, the only prints to depict the Pytchley Hunt. 'Charles Lorraine Smith ... was himself a great hunter and a friend of the famous Hugo Meynell. He was also an amateur artist and his pictures show the result of the happy combination of his hunting experience and artistic temperament' (Schwerdt). The great hunting feat of Dick Knight, huntsman to Lord Spencer, the Master of the Pytchley, is depicted on plate 3. This set is the second of the two earliest states, with imprints dated 1 May 1791 (the first state imprints are dated March 1790 and (?erroneously) March 1791). SCHWERDT COPY. Dick Knight, the subject of the frontispiece, 'was huntsman to Lord Spencer, the Master of the Pytchely, during whose mastership there was great rivalry between the followers of the Pytchely and those of the Quorn hunts. Dick Knight's feat was the result of a wager that he would be beaten that day by one of the Quornites, and Plate 3 "Now Contract..." shows how he got over an apparently unjumpable place, where the Quornites failed to follow him. To achieve his end he had to ride three different horses, the last one being the leader of a ploughing team' (Schwerdt). This set is the second of the two earliest states, with imprints dated 1 May 1791 (the first state imprints are dated March 1790 and (?erroneously) March 1791). SCHWERDT COPY.
