Rare Civil War Portrait of Civil War General Stephen Minot Weld, Jr. by Alfred E. Smith

    Est: $2,500 - $5,000

Important Antique Original Portrait by Listed American Artist Alfred E. Smith (American, 1863-1955) | Entitled “Stephen Minot Weld, Jr.” | Oil on Canvas | Hand Signed and dated by Artist – 1914 | This Remarkable Painting is housed in its original antique gold gilded gesso and wood frame | Dimensions: 37.5″ x 32″ | Very Few Remaining Smith Portraits are known to still exist | Alfred Everett Smith was active in Boston, Mass. in the early 20th Century, and was well known for portrait painting. It is believed that General Weld sat for this painting in early 1914. Stephen Minot Weld Jr. (January 4, 1842 – March 16, 1920) was a member of Boston’s illustrious Weld Family, and much-decorated United States Army officer of the American Civil War. Weld was a first-year student at Harvard Law School when the American Civil War broke out. He waisted no time in volunteering to join the action. Weld was appointed a 2nd lieutenant in the 18th Massachusetts Regiment on 27 January 1862, at the age of 19. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on the 1st November of the same year, and to captain on the 1st June 1863. He was honorably discharged on 25 December 1863. His regiment was part of the Army of the Potomac and he participated in the battles of Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg. He was twice captured by Confederate forces, and twice exchanged. A bullet once pierced his boot and he had his horse shot from under him. On 2 June 1864 he was commissioned as lieutenant colonel of the 56th Massachusetts Regiment and was promoted to colonel in command of the regiment on 31 May 1864. He was mustered out of the Army on 12 July 1865. On January 13, 1866, Weld was nominated by President Andrew Johnson to be breveted (i.e. an honorary promotion) to the rank of brevet brigadier general, U.S. Volunteers, to rank from March 13, 1865 (when he was 23 years old), for gallant and meritorious services. The U.S. Senate confirmed the brevet on March 12, 1866. Even today, Weld family members remember him as “the General.” In 1866 he was elected a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
