John Smart, RSA RSW, Scottish 1838-1899- Highland landscape on the banks of a loch; oil on canvas, signed 'J SMART' (lower right) and again 'J SMART RSA' (lower right), 30.8 x 46 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Smart used both watercolours and oils to depict the Scottish landscape, which was by far his favoured subject in all its grandeur and variety, with his works revealing the influence of his tutor Horatio McCulloch (1805-1867). The present work is characteristic of his evocative vistas, and he has effectively adopted broad, loose brushstrokes to convey the swirling clouds above, and the foliage which rustles in the wind. The artist's use of a dark colour palette further evokes the feeling of an oncoming storm, imparting the work with a sense of theatricality and foreboding which renders it particularly atmospheric.

This etching was published in the rare 1893 book "A Round Of The Links - The Golf Greens of Scotland." This print depicts golfers accompanied by young caddies and families on Stirling Castle Links. Set against the inspiring backdrop of the Old Town of Stirling, built on ancient volcanic slopes, and crowned by the historic Castle rising above the spectacular crag, the Stirling Golf Club was formed in 1869.
