Eric Sloane Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1905 - d. 1985

Artist Eric Sloane was an American-born painter who began his foray into the art world by painting old-script German signs in Pennsylvania as a youth. Eric Sloane's paintings became popular after Amelia Earhart bought his first cloudscape showing the view from an airplane. His work often featured signs, bridges, and airplanes, and Eric Sloane's art for sale was distinctive for his dry-brush painting technique where he wiped the brush after each stroke.

As a writer and artist, Eric Sloane published many books during his career, including the autobiographical book I Remember America that contained illustrations and sketches from the different phases of his career. Visitors to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum can view one of his biggest pieces of work, an enormous skyscape. Sight; 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. #5518 . Eric Sloane (1905-1985) was born in New York City to a well-to-do family. Early on, he took up an interest in art, spending many hours with neighbor and noted font inventor, Frederic Goudy (Goudy Type). Some of Sloane's first clients included aviation pioneers flying out of Roosevelt Field, Long Island. Many of those flyers insisted he paint the identifying marking on their planes. In exchange for teaching him to paint, Wiley Post himself, taught the young Hinrichs to fly. After his first flight the young man fell in love with clouds and the sky, themes that would be central to his work for the rest of his life. Among his early clients was Amelia Earhardt, who bought his first cloud painting. Said to be the finest cloud painter of his generation, his largest cloud painting graces an entire wall of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. Fascinated by weather, The Farmer's Almanac and the early American farmer's ability to interpret "weather signs", Sloane is credited with being the first television weatherman, having come up with the idea of having farmers from all over New England call in their weather observations to a Dumont, New York TV station where they could be broadcast to the regional audience. He penned several useful books on the subject.

            Est: $600 - $900

Eric Sloane (1905-1985) Market Bridge Connecticut 1975-80 The work of pen and ink on paper is signed lower left front and estate stamped verso. Accurately documenting the hand hewn covered bridges of New England was a trademark of Eric Sloane. It was obviously not unrelated to his fascination with early American tools, architecture, and New England's old growth forests - of which he taught himself much, and wrote about in many of the more than thirty books he authored. Image measures 10 x 15 with a framed size of 19.75 x 23.75 inches. ERIC SLOANE (1905-1985) OIL FOR ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH

            Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Eric Sloane (1905-1985) Poling Out Mid 20th Century The oil on Masonite signed lower right front in black pigment, and titled lower left in white, depicts duck hunters on a marsh, presumably in New England from which the artist hails, though he traveled most of the U.S. Standing and poling a boat, as seen here, is the best, if not only, way to navigate the shallow waters of a marsh. Eric Sloane got his start as a sign painter which led to painting mascots and names and tail numbers on early aviators' planes, which led to learning to fly, which led to an intense interest in and love of clouds and weather. A quick search produces six books on weather authored by this artist. Thus, it is no surprise that the majority of Eric Sloane paintings include a study of cloud formations and a depiction of the atmospheric moment. Here, the winter sky is streaked with color and low slung clouds early morning as the sky evolved from monochromatic to morning colors. According to the artist's biography from the Archives of askART.com, Amelia Earhardt bought Sloane's first cloud painting. Board measures 15.25 x 19.5 with a framed size of 19.75 x 24 inches. Sloane first worked in his 'teens as a commercial artist, sign painting and creating advertisements for the likes of tobacco companies Red Man and Bull Durham. Then he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York where he changed his name. Subsequently settling in Lichfield County, Connecticut, where he was inspired by the Hudson River School of artists, Sloane became fascinated by Americana and the American folk tradition. He wrote prolifically on every day life during the Colonial-era, from tools to architecture, farming techniques to folklore and became friends with the landscape painter Andrew Wyeth. In the 1950s he spent time in Taos New Mexico, attracted by the vast desert landscapes and the state's huge ecocative skies. One of his best known works is the skyscape mural, Earth Flight Environment, commissioned by the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum for its opening in 1976, which remains on display there in the Independence Avenue Lobby. Sloane has a museum dedicated to his life and work in Kent, Connecticut.

Signed lower right, along with inscription "Over Cimarron / Eric Sloane / Skytop Studio / Allendale N.J. 1939" on reverse. Eric Sloane was born Everard Jean Hinrichs in New York City. His earliest childhood recollections reflect an avid interest in art which led to his first career as a sign painter. Setting out in 1925, Sloane traveled throughout the Northeast, where he felt an immediate rapport with and love for the history, culture and longstanding icons of early American architecture: covered bridges, barns and homes dating to the colonial era. Sloane worked his way across America painting signs and venturing further and further west. In 1926 he arrived in Taos, New Mexico. Just as Sloane had become enamored of the historical Northeast, he felt an instant affinity towards the natural beauty and heritage of the Southwest. In Taos Sloane experienced life in a true artist's colony, working among painters such as Leon Gaspard and the members of Taos Society of Artists. He added his own footnote to their rich history by introducing to them his pioneer method of painting on masonite. The ultimate tribute to Sloane's insight and artistic ability is his ability to create wonderful skyscapes and cloudscapes. Among his early clients was Amelia Earnhardt, who bought his first cloud painting. Said to be the finest cloud painter of his generation, his largest cloud painting graces an entire wall of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. Eric's spirit lives on today as if he's determined to keep the invincible Early American Spirit alive. One has only to read one of his books or view his paintings to be touched by his unfathomable human compassion.
