William A Slaughter Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1923 - d. 2003

A minister and uniquely gifted artist, William A. Slaughter was a well-known 20th century landscape painter. He was born in Texas in 1923 and became a pastor following his service in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. His travels took him to Mexico, where he unearthed a passion and ability for painting. After moving to Dallas, he began successfully selling William A. Slaughter landscape paintings to members of his congregation, ultimately leading him to leave the ministry and become a full-time painter.

Artist William A. Slaughter won awards for his landscape art and still life paintings from the Artists and Craftsmen’s Association of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While most of his work featured Texas landscapes, he also painted wild life and ethnic groups, among several other subjects. Twin Oaks, Bluebonnets, and Texas Fall are among many of his landscape paintings for sale in the U.S. Vintage Americana landscape paintings, available online, are little windows into other places, from windswept prairies to unspoiled forests or snowy mountain peaks.

Large William A. Slaughter Landscape Painting

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

William A. Slaughter (American, 1923-2003). Large oil on canvas painting depicting a country road. Signed along the lower right. Lot Essay: William A. Slaughter's professional life began with his call to the ministry. After serving in the Air Force in WWII, he was ordained as Lutheran pastor serving in Texas. He began painting after serving a ministry in Mexico, and his artworks quickly gained popularity with his parishioners. Slaughter began displaying locally after moving to Dallas where he exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. He was mostly self-taught and inspired by the landscapes of Texas. His work also extended to wildlife, women and children, and still lives. In 1973, two years after leaving the ministry to pursue painting full-time, he was awarded his first prize. Since then until his death, he exhibited in all fifty states and at least sixteen countries. Though he left the ministry in the 70s, he still maintained ties to the church. One of his most cherished achievements was designing the stained glass windows for The King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas.

Slaughter, featuring Slaughter's famous Texas bluebonnets blossoming along the prairie in a carpet of blue, verdant oak trees, and a rambling stream, with rolling hills beyond and a glorious azure sky graced by billowing clouds above. His first call was to the ministry and after serving in the Air Force during WWII, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. This calling took him first to Lubbock, Texas, Mexico, and finally Dallas. It was during this ministry in Mexico that Mr. Slaughter began seriously to hear another call. Slaughter began painting and exhibiting at local art and craft shows after moving to Dallas. His church members began buying his paintings and before long he knew that he was going to have to make a life changing decision between the Ministry and art. Slaughter first belonged to and exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. In 1968, he was awarded first in landscape painting. In 1973, he was awarded first in still life painting. He was mostly self taught and combined innate ability and persistence to create many Texas landscapes, seemingly everyone's favorite subject, in realist style. He also did figure paintings, still life, wild life and ethnic women and children.
