Large William A. Slaughter Landscape Painting

William A. Slaughter (American, 1923-2003). Large oil on canvas painting depicting a country road. Signed along the lower right. Lot Essay: William A. Slaughter's professional life began with his call to the ministry. After serving in the Air Force in WWII, he was ordained as Lutheran pastor serving in Texas. He began painting after serving a ministry in Mexico, and his artworks quickly gained popularity with his parishioners. Slaughter began displaying locally after moving to Dallas where he exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. He was mostly self-taught and inspired by the landscapes of Texas. His work also extended to wildlife, women and children, and still lives. In 1973, two years after leaving the ministry to pursue painting full-time, he was awarded his first prize. Since then until his death, he exhibited in all fifty states and at least sixteen countries. Though he left the ministry in the 70s, he still maintained ties to the church. One of his most cherished achievements was designing the stained glass windows for The King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas.

Slaughter '73 William Slaughter was born in San Antonio, Texas. His first call was to the ministry and after serving in the Air Force during WWII, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. This calling took him first to Lubbock, Texas, Mexico, and finally Dallas. Slaughter began painting and exhibiting at local art shows after moving to Dallas. Slaughter first belonged to and exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. In 1968, he was awarded first prize in landscape painting. In 1973, he was awarded first prize in still-life painting. Mostly self-taught, Slaughter is still known for his Texas bluebonnet landscapes, which capture the peaceful nature of spring in the Hill Country.

Slaughter, featuring Slaughter's famous Texas bluebonnets blossoming along the prairie in a carpet of blue, verdant oak trees, and a rambling stream, with rolling hills beyond and a glorious azure sky graced by billowing clouds above. The painting demonstrates Slaughter's keen eye for color - dazzling us with myriad shades of blue and green - and impressionistic light effects. Remarkably, Slaughter was primarily self taught; however, he had an innate penchant for realism and developed his talent through patience and diligence. A stunning landscape painting by Bill Slaughter, mounted in an attractive custom frame. Slaughter first belonged to and exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas. In 1968, he was awarded first in landscape painting. In 1973, he was awarded first in still life painting. He was mostly self taught and combined innate ability and persistence to create many Texas landscapes, seemingly everyone's favorite subject, in realist style. He also did figure paintings, still life, wild life and ethnic women and children.
