    William Skelton (1763-1848) English engraver, born London. His chief work consists of a series of portraits embracing member of the Royal Family from Geo. III to the accession of Victoria in 1837. The engraving offered here is called THE OWL, THE SWAN, THE COCK, THE SPIDER, THE ASS AND THE FARMER, signed in the plate, 3 x 3-5/8 plus margins. Circa 1797.

    Engraved by William Skelton (English, 1763-1848) after the painting by James Northcote (English, 1746-1831), "King Richard the Third, Act IV, Scene III, Tower of London", engraving, published London 1795. Engraving depicts a scene from the Shakespearean play in which the two young princes, having been murdered in their sleep, are lowered down the staircase by Tyrell and an armored knight. Framed approximately 33.25" x 26.75", sight size approximately 23" x 16.5".
