Herbert Singleton (American/New Orleans, 1945-2007), "Snake Totem", painted carved wood, unsigned, h. 97 3/4 in. Provenance: Barrister's Gallery, New Orleans, LA; Finley Collection. Exh.: "Soul Providers: African-American Art from the Finley Collection Original Paintings & Sculpture by Self-Taught Artists", The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, Biloxi, MS, Jan. 11 - Feb. 22, 2002; "Finley Collection", Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture, Natchez, MS, May 2009 - May 2013; "The John and Pam Finley Collection of African and Folk Art", University of Wyoming Art Museum, Laramie, WY, June 8 - Aug. 17, 2013. Note: Born in New Orleans into poverty, Herbert Singleton began carving walking sticks at age of seventeen to pay debts and support himself. Singleton never used precut wood for his sculptures, instead preferring branches and stumps found along the Mississippi river levee. One such piece is “Snake Totem” offered here, carved from a single large piece of driftwood and painted using bright, simple colors to emphasize the menacing nature of the form. This work also emphasizes one of the inexplicable aspects of Singleton's work, the often similarity with art of the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria of which Singleton had no knowledge. Herbert "Coon" Singleton (American/Louisiana)

          Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Herbert "Coon" Singleton (American/Louisiana, 1945-2007), "Beguiled", bas-relief painted wood, signed en verso, titled lower center, 38 3/4 in. x 20 in., unframed. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, 2004. Note: Born in New Orleans into poverty, Herbert Singleton began carving walking sticks at the age of seventeen to pay off debts and support himself. He expanded his media to include works done on branches and stumps found along the Mississippi river levee, as well as old house doors. These works reflect his hard childhood and his view of urban life in America. Later in his life he began to carve pieces such as “Beguiled” offered here, using bas-relief and vivid paint to depict Biblical themes. Singleton referred to his vast knowledge of religious scriptures and his resulting artistic output with a touch of skepticism: “No matter if you’re going to a preacher, a priest, a witchdoctor or a voodoo queen you’re only getting confidence by proxy. Can’t nobody solve the problem but the person hisself.” Ref.: Yelen, Alice Rae. Passionate Visions of the American South. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1994, pp. 137, 206-207, 327

Herbert Singleton (American/New Orleans, 1945-2007) "Big Hat Willie - Chained in Evil Love", painted and bas-relief carved on found chifferobe door, titled at top and bottom of panel, 44-1/4" x 15-3/4"; together with Two Painted and Carved Wood Ceremonial Walking Sticks, vividly decorated, both with carved African masks as handles, h. 36". Note: Herbert Singleton was a self-taught artist known for his brightly painted bas-relief carvings depicting poverty, drug abuse and the crime that affected his neighborhood. In this work, Singleton illustrates the ill-fated love story of Big Hat Willie, a notorious pimp, and his sixteen-year-old girlfriend. The young girl's parents killed the lovers as represented by the artist's placement of a coffin at the bottom of the panel. His work is in the public collections of The Ogden Museum of Art, New Orleans, Louisiana; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
