Signed Gib Singleton Silver Crucifix, Bowed Cross

            Est: $8,000 - $15,000

Gib Singleton (American, 1936-2014), "Bowed Cross", edition of 1, silver, ca. 1964. Signed on back of vertical element of the cross. Created in Gib Singleton's signature 'Emotional Realism' style, a finely cast solid silver sculpture of Jesus on the Cross, this cross representing a bent dogwood tree according to the artist, because that was the type of wood used to make Christ's cross. Singleton captures the drama and sorrow of this tragedy with a truly expressive depiction. The anatomy is skillfully delineated with elongated limbs and a severely emaciated torso and limbs. Aside for the loincloth and crown of thorns, Christ is depicted with as much of his suffering body as is possible. Interestingly, a bronze version of this piece was in the Vatican Museum collection when it caught the eye of Pope John Paul II who in turn asked to have the piece attached atop his crozier. This crozier was then passed to Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. In addition, one of Singleton's crosses resides near the Shroud of Turin. Size: 9.875" H (25.1 cm); 11.625" H (29.5 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 19.6 ounces or 555.65 grams. Gib Singleton has received numerous degrees from institutions, including Washington University, St. Louis, MO; Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL; and The Art Institute in Chicago on scholarship; as well as several of Fulbright Fellowships. One Fulbright sent Mr. Singleton to work as a staff artist in the Vatican for three years. Many of his pieces are now in the Vatican Museum, including Pope John Paul II’s silver crucifix staff, with the bowed cross and Christ figure. In addition, a bronze and wood crucifix by Singleton rests beside the Holy Shroud of Turin in Italy. On another Fulbright Fellowship, Singleton attended Belle Di Arte Academy in Florence, Italy where he won the prestigious First Place Sculpture award. Interestingly, while in Florence, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis asked Mr. Singleton to help with the reconstruction of hundreds of pieces of historic sculpture that had been destroyed by floods during the early 1960's. Mr. Singleton's works have been collected by many important individuals - from actors to spiritual and political leaders - throughout the world. These include former Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir who left her collection of Singleton works to the state of Irael; former governor Ruben Askew, Tallahassee, FL; acclaimed artist Peter Max, New York, NY; legendary actor Paul Newman; and composer Sammy Kahn - to name a few. In addition, Mr. Singleton's works have been collected by elite museums and institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Museum of Natural History, New York, NY; Belle di Arte Academy, Florence, Italy; Yad Vashim Memorial in Jerusalem; and the Vatican Museum, Rome, Italy. Mr. Singleton's works have also been widely exhibited. Venues include: A.I.A. Architect Exhibits, Massachusetts; Bauhaus Museum, Westport, Connecticut; Belle de Arte Academy, Florence, Italy; The Boca Raton Center for the Arts, Florida; Bridgeport Jewish Community Center, Connecticut; Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, Illinois; the Madison Avenue Gallery, New York, NY; Plaza las Americas, Puerto Rico; St. Louis Museum of Fine Arts, St. Louis, Missouri; University of Pennsylvania; the Museum of Natural History, New York, NY and more. Provenance: private Turner collection, Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA, gifted directly by Mr. Singleton All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
