Preston Singletary Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1963 -

Preston Singletary (born 1963 in San Francisco, California, U.S.) is a Native American glass artist. Preston Singletary grew up in the Seattle area listening to stories told by his great-grandparents, who were both full Tlingit.[2] In high school he met and became friends with future glass artist Dante Marioni, son of glass artist Paul Marioni. Shortly after graduating high school, Singletary (who was actively pursuing a career as a musician at the time) was asked by Dante Marioni to work as a night watchman at what was then the Glass Eye, a Seattle glass-blowing studio. Singletary quickly moved from being night watchman to working the day shift to eventually joining one of the studio’s production teams. In 1984, Singletary took part in a workshop at Pilchuck Glass School for the first time. He has since been involved in Pilchuck as both a teacher and student. Singletary has blown glass around the world in countries such as Sweden, Italy, and Finland. In the late 1980s, Singletary began incorporating traditional Tlingit themes into his work and reaching out to other Northwest Coast Native American artists.

            Est: $3,000 - $5,000

(Tlingit/Washington, born 1963, born 1982) 2020, signed verso "Skyriver2020/Preston Singletary", blown, sculpted, and carved glass, 18 x 10 x 8 in., with metal stand, 17-1/4 in. Provenance: Stonington Gallery, Seattle, Washington, (with copy of receipt $7,500 dated May 21, 2021); Private Collection Asheville, North Carolina Note from Stonington Gallery: Entuk is a cultural superhero. A woman who was grieving the loss of a child is crying as she walks along a beach one day. Her nose is full of mucus and she blows her nose and as it comes out it lands on an empty mussel shell. It starts to move, grow and change shape. It assumes the shape of a small boy and grows up to be a powerful leader in the tribe. This is a story that has been illustrated by Joe David (Nuu-chah-nulth) throughout his career in multiple media, and continues to inspire him. Singletary and Skyriver have both been mentored by Joe David throughout their careers, and consider him both a guiding light and close friend. This version of Entuk continues the retelling of this story through new generations.

Preston Singletary learned the art of glass blowing by working with artists in the Seattle area including Benjamin Moore and Dante Marioni, as well as with Venetian glass masters, such as Lino Tagliapietra, Cecco Ongaro, and Pino Signoretto. Singletary was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Puget Sound, Washington. Singletary's work uniquely draws on his Tlingit cultural heritage by combining European glass blowing traditions with Northwest Native art and designs. Inspired by Native American, Maori, Hawaiian, and Australian Aboriginal artists, his work is informed by the unique visual language and artistic perspective of indigenous peoples and their cultural connections to the land. For example, Singletary's works feature themes of transformation, animal spirits, and shamanism through blown glass forms and sand carved Tlingit designs. Singletary's works are included in many museum collections such as The British Museum, London; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Seattle Art Museum, Washington; the Corning Museum of Glass, New York; and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., among many others.
