Alan Singer New York, (B. 1950) Brownstone Rooftop, cityscape, 1977 oil on canvas Biography from the Archives of askART: The following is from the artist, who was born in New York City: Primary Subjects: Since the 1960's my paintings have begun from observations of nature and from the figure in an environment. I use local landscape and incorporate natural and organic elements with man-made or geometric forms. Recent paintings and drawings have become totally abstract, and developed in part with a concern for patterns and repetitive color and form. I try to combine my love of nature, with an abiding interest for the forms of art (often from native and tribal art). Primary Mediums: Oil paints, watercolors, acrylic paints, printmaking (intaglio ) and pastels. Styles: Some of my work is distinctly representational -Mostly from direct observation in local landscape, from botanical subjects to historic architecture. My abstract art ranges from the biomorphic to structured hard edge geometry. I like to reference textile arts in some of my abstract works. Many of my interests stem from the art I saw as a child. My father was a famous painter of wildlife art, my mother was an illustrator and textile designer. Personal Background Born: June 19, 1950, New York City. Raised in New Hyde Park and Jericho, Long Island. I now live in Rochester New York. I have lived all my life in some part of New York State. I was born in Manhattan, and spent my childhood on Long Island. When I was a teenager I began formal art training at the Museum of Modern Art School, in the basement of the museum ( MOMA). From there I went to the Art Students League, and learned to draw the figure. My college time was most fruitfully spent at The Cooper Union and later getting a masters at Cornell University. From the time I was in Cornell, I began to earn my living illustrating books and collectibles. For years I have loved painting outdoors, whether it is in Maine, or Nantucket, or along the Erie Canal. My abstract art began as a painting idea in 1975, and has become a dynamic force in my art. I am mostly recognized for my representations of nature. I now teach Painting and Drawing, at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York. Educational Background In 1965 I started my studies at the Art Students League with Dickinson, R. B. Hale, and Macabi Greenfield. In the summer I drew with Marshal Glaser. The Cooper Union accepted me in their BFA program which included years of study in painting with Wolf Kahn, Paul Resika, Leland Bell, and Armando Morales among many others like Dore Ashton, Hollis Frampton, and Brian O'Doherty. In 1971 I spent the summer at Yale University at Norfolk. There I met Paul Strand, and Walker Evans, with Walter Rosenblum. In 1972 I graduated from Cooper Union with a BFA and went upstate to Ithaca, to start my masters degree at Cornell University. I also began my first book illustration project during the next three years. I graduated with a MFA in painting in 1975. In 1972 I studied at Boston University at Tanglewood for a summer, and the following year in 1973, I was a scholarship student at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Artist's Statement : I have a lifelong belief in the power of visual communication. For me all art is biographical, even a bit of geometry tells me something important about who I am. Painting and drawing express a natural rhythm that is both personal and universal. My notion of visual art includes aspects of the classic with idiosyncratic gestures that hopefully can be felt like a fresh breeze, or a deep thought. Color to me has a resonance and a sonority that is both intellectual and spiritual. Painting to me is a love of form, filtered through a life experience of possibility.
