                Est: $5,000 - $8,000

SIMPSON, William (1923-1899). A Mani or Praying Wheel, Soonum, Himalayas. Pencil, pen and grey ink, grey wash, heightened with white on paper. Signed lower right "Wm Simpson" and inscribed lower left "Praying Wheel at Soonum". 10 1/2" x 8 1/4" visible, 19 1/2" x 17" framed. Provenance: With Hartnoll & Eyre, London; Christie's London, June 1997, Lot 147. A finished watercolour of this subject was exhibited at the Fine Art Society, London, Mr William Simpson of the Illustrated London News, Pioneer War Artist 1823-1899, 8 June-4 July 1987, no.79. In 1861 Simpson embarked on his second Himalayan tour. After a dramatic journey from Agra to the source of the Ganges, where Simpson and his party had to fight through rain, snow and a flooded river, they arrived at the Manja Kanta Pass at some 13,000 feet, where many of the party suffered from snow blindness. Once they had made their way over the Roopin Pass, said to be as high as Mont Blanc, they finally arrived at Soonum. At Soonum, Simpson was fascinated by the variety of praying machines, some of which were driven by water. From Soonum they rejoined the route to China and crossed the Parung and Tanglung Passes at 18,000 feet. Simpson continued to wander the Himalayas until recalled by Lord Canning to Allahabad in early November.

William Simpson's Sketches at the Seat of War - Two Volumes with 81 Hand-colored Lithographs

                Est: $2,000 - $4,000

This two volume set is William Simpson's Sketches at the Sea of War in the East. The work was published in London by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co. between 1855 and 1856. The volumes, which detail the Crimean War, feature 81 lithographs and is bound in original half red morocco. It is the first and second series complete with dedication and lists of plates and features original hand-coloring. William Simpson (1823–1899) was a Scottish artist, war artist and war correspondent. The Crimean War was one of the first wars documented extensively in written reports, drawings, and some photographs. Simpson helped cover this war, which was the first time Britain was able to follow the day to day realities. “These plates are indeed an impressive piece of work, not only artistically and technically, but also as pictorial reporting. Simpson must in this way rank as an early war correspondent.” (Abbey) “After the Crimean war broke out Simpson was engaged upon views of the Baltic battles for Colnaghi & Son; and when that firm decided to publish a large illustrated work on the Crimean campaign from sketches made on the spot, Simpson was selected for the work on Day’s recommendation. He started on short notice, arrived at Balaclava in November 1854, and remained with the British army till the fall of Sebastopol. Simpson was thus the pioneer war-artist, and received several commissions to paint incidents in the war for the queen. The Seat of War in the East was published in two volumes by Colnaghi in 1855-6, and is still regarded as a brilliant example of lithographic work.” (DNB)

Simposon April 1855 (lower left) watercolour and bodycolour, heightened with white, over traces of pencil 27 x 44 cm PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, Lot 134, 13.11.1997 William Simpson was born in Glasgow in 1823 and began his artistic career as an apprentice lithographer. He moved to London in 1851. In 1854, shortly after the outbreak of the Crimean War, he was commissioned to create a drawing of the city of Sebastopol under siege. However, he was unable to find any source material to work from, as no British artist had ever been to Sebastopol to sketch it first-hand. The lithography firm Colnaghi and Co. approached Simpson and asked if he would like to make the trip. He accepted, and arrangements were made for him to accompany the British Army to Crimea. Simpson produced hundreds of first-hand sketches of the people and places he encountered on his travels. He became one of Britain’s very first war artists, earning himself the nickname ‘Crimean Simpson’.

WILLIAM SIMPSON (BRITISH 1823 - 1899) WILLIAM SIMPSON (BRITISH 1823 - 1899) Praying wheels at Soonum inscribed Praying- Wheels at Soonum (lower left) and To S.R. Hutt from W.m Simpson. 10th NOV. 1896. (lower right) watercolour 34 x 24.2 cm These praying wheels appear as fig. 2 of in Simpson's book The Buddhist praying-wheel (published in 1896). William Simpson (1823 - 1899) was a distinguished watercolourist and war artist. Having established his reputation by documenting the Crimean war in 1854, Day and Sons, the London lithography firm, commissioned him to sketch well-known sites in and around Delhi associated with the Revolt of 1857 by Indians against the rule of the British East India Company. Simpson arrived in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1859 and travelled widely. His rapid pencil drawings formed the preparatory studies for his finished watercolours done after his return to London in 1862. His detailed journal, sketches and pictures from India resulted in final highly coloured, evocative, and romantic interpretations of the landscape and architecture.

Provenance: Parker Fine Art Auctions, Farnham, Surrey: November 26, 2020 (Lot 10, ascribed as "Circle of Thomas Allom"). Attribution to William Simpson is based on stylistic grounds (see Bonhams, London: April 29, 2003, lot 40 watercolor of the Great Wall) and technical findings including J Whatman watermarked paper also found in signed watercolor album sold at Christie's: London, October 4, 1999, lot 106 (see "A Ruined Temple & the Broken Statue of Memnon at Thebes" watercolor with identical provenance). Remembered as a war artist in the Crimean War, William Simpson documented the battle of Sebastopol for lithographers Day & Son in 1855, before joining the British Army as a camp follower in Abyssinia and covering the Franco-German War in 1870. In 1869, Simpson was commissioned to sketch the opening of the Suez Canal for the Illustrated London News. During the same time he visited Jerusalem on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund to record the excavations of Charles Warren. The present watercolor may be situated within the context of Simpson's archeological interest in Classical Antiquity. From a set of 15 views formerly preserved in red and gilt leather album.

Attribution based on stylistic proximity to Simpson's late period (compare Bonhams, London: April 29, 2003, lot 40 watercolor of the Great Wall) and material evidence including paper watermark "J Whatman" (see "A Ruined Temple & the Broken Statue of Memnon at Thebes" from the same set) matching characteristics of signed watercolor album sold at Christie's: London, October 4, 1999, lot 106. It is tempting to situate the present watercolor within the context of Simpson's archeological interest in Classical Antiquity.

SIMPSON WATERCOLOR OF THE TOMB OF THE SONS OF DAVID

                Est: $1,200 - $1,600

SIMPSON, William (1823-1899). Tomb of the Sons of David. Watercolor and pencil on paper laid down on tinted paper mat. Ca. 1869. 6 1/4" x 5" sheet. Provenance: Parker Fine Art Auctions, Farnham, Surrey: November 26, 2020 (Lot 10, ascribed as "Circle of Thomas Allom"). View of the rotunda and Aedicula enclosing the Holy Sepulchre, showing large sail with the Jerusalem cross, groups of pilgrims (Franciscan monks) and locals conversing with a (Jesuit?) priest wearing a white cassock with the Christogram in the right foreground. A rendering of the Aedicula and its surroundings in their 19th-century appearance (a fire ravaged the rotunda in 1808) with the chapel's Osmanic Baroque-style decoration and massive candelabra. The perspective is vaguely reminiscent of David Roberts's lithograph of the same subject. Formerly part of a set of 15 watercolors ascribable to the war artist William Simpson on material evidence and stylistic grounds (cf. Bonhams, London: April 29, 2003, lot 40 watercolor of the Great Wall).

SIMPSON WATERCOLOR OF THE TEMPLE EXCAVATED OUT OF THE SOLID ROCK AT PETRA.

                Est: $1,200 - $1,500

SIMPSON, William (1823-1899). Temple Excavated out of the Solid Rock at Petra. Watercolor and pencil on paper laid down on tinted paper mat. Ca. 1869. 5 3/4" x 7" sheet. Provenance: Parker Fine Art Auctions, Farnham, Surrey: November 26, 2020 (Lot 10, ascribed as "Circle of Thomas Allom"). A sunset view of the archeological city of Petra in southern Jordan showing the rock tombs behind the Treasury at the foot of the mountain en-Nejr and its stone theatre embedded within rose-colored mountain walls. Pictorial representations of Petra date back to the explorations of Léon de Laborde and Linant Pasha (Linant de Bellefonds) in 1828. The narrative and lithographs of David Roberts further modeled a Romanticized vision of Petra during the Victorian Age which it is tempting to connect with Simpson's markedly serene rendition of the ancient city. Provenance: Parker Fine Art Auctions, Farnham, Surrey: November 26, 2020 (Lot 10, ascribed as "Circle of Thomas Allom"). View of the Ararat Plain with Mount Ararat in the background. Bedouin caravan descending towards a tent in the middleground. A view of the Biblical mountain considered the resting place of Noah's Ark. Rainbow framing the mountain summit as memento of the covenant between God and Noah (Genesis 9:13-14: "I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.") Watercolor and pencil on paper laid down on tinted paper mat. Ca. 1869. 7" x 5 1/2" sheet. Provenance: Parker Fine Art Auctions, Farnham, Surrey: November 26, 2020 (Lot 10, ascribed as "Circle of Thomas Allom"). View of the rock-cut Tombs of the Kings (actually Tomb of Queen Helena of Adiabene) north of Jerusalem's city walls, traditionally believed to be the burial place of the Judean Kings. Romanticized view of the rectangular tomb entrance with its carved architrave, triglyphs, and frieze decoration consistent with 19th-century iconography (see David Roberts's "Entrance to the Tomb of the Kings" or Lemaitre and Cassas's 1845 engraving of the same subject). William Simpson visited Jerusalem on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund and recorded the archeological work of Charles Warren before traveling to document the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
