Rare Antique Print Titled "The Negro" Published in The Art Journal, London, 1853

        Est: $200 - $400

Antique Print Titled "The Negro" Published in The Art Journal, London, 1853; this print is marked "W. HULLAND, ENGRAVER" and  "PRINTED BY G. VIRTUE". It is based on a painting titled "Head of a Man" attributed to artist John Simpson (1782 - 1847). This original print incorrectly attributes the work to "W. SIMPSON, PAINTER". The figure is believe to be American actor Ira Frederick Aldridge (1807 - 1867). This is a very striking and noble portrait. The print is on heavy stock, it is in good condition showing some foxing and a water stain on the lower left corner. The portrait still shows very well. It is unbound with the left edge showing evidence it was cut from the original publication. It measures 8 1/2" x 11". Today, the original painting is in the collection of the Tate Britain Museum.
