          ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - TOUCH

          Est: -

The year 1982 represents immediate contact in the work of Adriena Šimotová. There were several touches - moments when she imprinted her hands directly into the cannons. Touch is contact, touch is the most basic knowledge of the world, touch is an imaginary border - this is my space and that is yours. She also processed the support paper on which the work appears by touch - by squeezing, which is a haptic trace of individual touches. The presented composition is very sophisticated in its minimalist form. Just as a book opens and closes, hands also open and close. The work is thus non-linear, interacting and telling the story of the movement of the gesture. A gesture that is both a silent contemplation and an expression of the relationship between me and you. Technique: tempera, handmade paper, cardboard, Signed: sign. lower left: 1982 Adriena Šimotová

          Est: -

Adriena Šimotová left the classical painting technique and resorted to experiments, especially with textiles and paper. She attracted attention with her distinctive artistic technique, which consists of crumpling, cutting, coloring and layering paper, thus creating haptically interesting surfaces or even entire spatial objects. The building is probably more personal and is dated "P.F. 1984". Technique: Crumpled paper, pastel, acrylic, Signed: Lower center "Adriena Šimotová"

          ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - A MODERN COMPOSITION

          Est: -

The presented still life falls into the creative field of phenomenological research of things and their place in our lives. Adriena Šimotová was probably inspired by the elaboration of the topic - Heidegger's lecture - A Thing that circulated in Czech environment in a samizdat edition. The thing represents the companionship of the earth and the heavens, mortal and divine. Someone must have wondered first what such a thing might look like. The mug in the composition can thus represent the very materialized idea - an idea that has materialized around the empty space and is close to us. With a deep inner concentration, Adriena Šimotová tried to look at the world and project it on her favorite medium, which was paper. In a subtle form, she represented man and the things around him and their significance in human life. She experimented with different forms of expression - printing, crumpling, laminating or perforating paper to give it a haptic dimension. ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - FROM THE CYCLE OF EVERYDAY GESTURES

          Est: -

Communication without words, with gestures and through the human body - all this is hidden in works full of deep emotion by Adriena Šimotová. The fragile beauty of her works, reflecting the difficult moments of her life, is characterized by minimalism, femininity, and moderate volatility, which draws passers-by into a quiet contemplation of everyday life and the gifts of life. Šimotová is one of the few Czech artists whose work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, known as the Center Georges Pompidou. In France, where she often exhibited and worked in the last years of her life, she was also appointed a Knight of the Order for Arts and Literature. ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - A HANGER

          Est: -

Her artistic work is closely linked to her life destiny. While in the beginning she devoted herself largely to landscape painting, later she switched to figural themes and after the death of her husband and son she focused on working with paper and textiles, collages and installations. Although in the last years of her life Adriena Šimotová were limited by the physical possibilities of her body, she did not stop creating, new works depicting objects and the human body were still being created - the finer and inner the harder it was for the author to move. The presented still life "Hanger" belongs to the creative circle of phenomenological research of things and their place in our lives. ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - ABOUT CLOSE AND REMOTE (INTERVIEW)

          Est: -

The basic part of Adriena Šimotová's work was a multifaceted work with the essence of image and the possibility of image communication. At the beginning of the 1990s, Adriena Šimotová was just over sixty years old and was at the peak of her creative powers. During the first five years after the Velvet Revolution, she managed to create twenty solo exhibitions, six of them abroad. Her work reflects her desire to experiment with the medium of paper and to create spatially and haptically interesting objects. One of the main themes to which Šimotová paid fundamental attention in her work was man, his physically perceived through the prism of the inner world. She depicted a figure or parts of the human body as a tool, as a language in which to tell the story of the soul. In the list of Šimotová's works, which is part of her extensive monograph from 2006, the sculptures About the near and far are listed under numbers 693 to 695. In the mentioned monograph on pages 160–161 we find a view of the exhibition in Mánes, where Conversation. The original installation of the sculpture was different than it is now. The right figure of the composition was placed on his side directly on the floor. There is also a whole series of photographs by Hana Hamplová from the artist's studio, in which the individual sculptures can be seen in a still unfinished state. In most of the pictures, the left, female figure of the Conversation appears, which is easily recognizable thanks to the distinctive hem on the right shoulder. Three of these images are also published in the catalog of the exhibition About Close and Remote. The photograph in which Šimotová herself sits on a chair next to the statue is particularly impressive. Without knowing it at the time of its preparation, the exhibition in Mánes was for Adriena Šimotová a point behind one stage and the beginning or foreshadowing of things to come. The texts of the catalog written before this tragic event seem almost prophetic in retrospect. "Alone in space, they revoke reality and the dream, as is true of the author's imagination," writes Jiří Šetlík about the presented sculptures and continues: "It draws from the layers of memory, whose combs intertwine with current experiences and feelings. The ambivalence between the real and the unreal refers to the idea of living shadows from Plato's cave. Fascinated by the magic of the world in question, Adriena turns in pulsating echoes of emotion and thought to the incomprehensible world of the soul, to the entity of the spiritual meaning of events. Adriena Šimotová's work is a redeemed testimony of one human path of our time. Not only by the discovery of creative methods and forms, but above all by the authenticity of the exposed statement about himself and knowledge of the world and life, the painter's work gained an indispensable place in the art of the second half of the 20th century, in Czech and world contexts. She also became her self-portrait. ”Adriena Šimotová received a number of domestic and foreign awards for her work. Her works are represented in, for example, the Vienna Albertina and the Museum der modernen Kunst, the Bibliotheque National and the Center Pompidou in Paris, as well as in Florence, Geneva, Washington, Chicago and many other galleries, as well as in private collections. Technique: Paper, wire, plexiglass case

          ADRIENA ŠIMOTOVÁ 1926 - 2014 - STILL LIFE

          Est: -

Adriena Šimotová departed from classic painting techniques and diverged to experimentation, especially with textile and paper. She earned attention for her unique artistic technique, which involved pressing, cutting through and layering paper to create imprints, haptically interesting surfaces, and entire spatial objects. The presented still life falls into the creative circle of phenomenological research of things and their place in our lives. Heidegger's lecture - The Thing - was probably inspired to work on the topic. The thing represents the companionship of the earth and heaven, mortal and divine. Technique: Pencil, charcoal, coloured pencil, paper, Signed: Lower center "Adriena Šimotová 2008"

          A TABLE FOR ANGELS

          Est: -

Adriena Šimotová’s A Table for Angels was included in the Czech Light and Spirit exhibition in Spain, where the artist presented three “table” installations (A Table from Somewhere, A Magic Table and A Table for Angels). Various iterations of both subjects, whether the table (as a place for rituals and meetings) or angels (our guides and messengers of God), were treated often in her work. Multifaceted work with the nature of an image and the opportunities presented by visual communication were also basic elements in Šimotová’s work. At the turn of the 1970s, after she, as a respected painter, abandoned traditional painting, the defining moments of her art form became perforation, transparency, and layering. She applied frottage in a unique way in her works when depicting people and objects, and worked with stencils, photography and its transforming role in relation to the individual or collective memory. Adriena Šimotová was one of the most respected figures in Czech art and culture in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Born in a Czech-French family connected with the Masarykian traditions of the First Czechoslovak Republic, she studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague under Josef Kaplický, where she also met her later husband, Jiří John, a distinguished printmaker and painter. They belonged to the UB 12 art group alongside Václav Boštík, Stanislav Kolíbal, Věra Janoušková and Vladimír Janoušek, Alena Kučerová and others. |Adriena Šimotová received many awards for her work in her native country and abroad. Her works are represented in the Albertina and mumok in Vienna, Bibliotheque National and Centre Pompidou in Paris, and in Florence, Geneva, Washington D.C., Chicago and many other galleries and private collections. Restored and filled, consulted with Mgr. Pavel Brunclík from the Adriena Šimotová and Jiří John Foundation.

Scratch drawing with graphite on special layered paper, housed in a protective wooden case. Signed lower center: "Adriena Šimotová 86" This large-format work by Adriena Šimotová, a rare sight on the market, dates from the pinnacle of her career and is a highly prestigious expression prized by collectors and galleries alike. Throughout the 1980s, Šimotová experimented with paper. Her best works, which reflect love, pain, faith and hope, were made at the end of this period. She expressed transience and fleetingness in subtle, perforated, multilayer paper form, earning her attention on the international scene in the 1990s (Vienna, Paris, Salzburg). This delicate, subtle work captures the human object through tissue paper, portraying friends, family or herself in abstract self-portraits through pigment to create a direct bodily trace of the depicted subject. Šimotová studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design under Professor Josef Kaplický, and in the 1960s she was a member of the UB 12 art group with Jiří John, Václav Boštík, Věra Janoušková and Vladimír Janoušek. From 1990 she started to travel to work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and lecture abroad. The works of this major Czech painter and graphic artist are represented in the Albertina and mumok in Vienna, Bibliotheque National and Centre Pompidou in Paris, and in Florence, Geneva, Washington D.C., Chicago and many other galleries and private collections.
