Lucien J. Simon (1861 - 1945). Portrait of man. Oil canvas. Signed L. Simon '91.(1891) Exceptional original frame. Frame: H 48 in. W 38-1/2 in. Canvas: H 39-1/2 in. W 28-3/4 in. Condition: Excellent condition. Lucien Joseph Simon (18 July 1861 – 1945) was a French painter and teacher born in Paris. After graduating from the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, he studied painting at the studio of Jules Didier, then from 1880 to 1883 at l’Académie Julian*. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais* from 1891, and at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1891 he married Jeanne Dauchez, the sister of André Dauchez (1870–1948), and became infatuated with the scenery and peasant life of her native Brittany. In 1895 he met Charles Cottet and became a member of his Bande noire or "Nubians", along with Dauchez, Xavier Prinet (1861–1946), Edmond Aman-Jean (1858–1936) and René Ménard (1862–1930), employing the principles of Impressionism* but in darker tones. He was one of the founding teachers at Martha Stettler and Alice Dannenberg's Académie de la Grande Chaumière* in 1902. He also taught at the Académie Colarossi* around the same time, as well as taking private students. He taught at École Nationale des Beaux-Arts* from 1923 and elected to its Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1929, a position he held for 13 years. In 1937 he won First Prize at "l’Exposition universelle de Paris" for his work on the Luxembourg pavilion. Paul Simon (1892–1979), the son of Lucien and Jeanne (who was also a painter), was a noted animal sculptor. A famous portrait of Lucien Simon, painted by Charles Cottet in 1907, hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The Gazette du Bon Ton features some of the most desirable pochoir, fashion lithographs. The fashion periodical ran from 1912 to 1925, and greatly influenced the style of the time. Great artists from the day, such as George Barbier and Andre Marty, contributed beautiful plates to the work. Gazette du Bon Ton was published by Lucien Vogel in Paris. The work was meant to appeal to the upper echelon of Parisian society. The fashion prints beauty and quality of the publication has taken on great appeal through the time. The prints feature dramatic pochoir coloring, which is created when single layers of color are added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil. Many prominent artists contributed the magazine including Barbier, Marty, Brissaud, Worth, Monvel, Lepape, Pacquin, & Poiret. George Barbier's contributions to this work are particularly desirable. He contributed greatly to design in this era and also had work featured in Vogue. Lucien Vogel, fashion publisher, (pictured above), was the brilliant creator of this famous Art Deco fashion magazine. He was well-known and well-connected paving the way for the Gazette's success.
