Signed by the artist and poet Sonia Sanchez and dated in ink, lower margin. My Crazy Red Rooster is a mural that brings together the creative genius of two Philadelphia icons: neo-African Abstract Expressionist painter and poet Danny Simmons and celebrated Black Arts Movement poet Sonia Sanchez. Ms. Sanchez selected one of three works created by Danny Simmons, entitled The Red Rooster, to inspire her to create an original haiku to accompany it on the mural wall. The mural was painted by Efrain Herrera with assistance from Darya Prudnikova. Contemporary New York artist, collector and dealer, Danny Simmons has shown his abstract paintings and works on paper extensively in museum and gallery exhibitions over the past 15 years. His works are in the Anacostia Museum, Washington, DC, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, the Hampton Museum, Hampton, VA and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York. Simmons owns the Rush Arts Gallery in Manhattan and Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn. A poet and cofounder of the Def Poetry Jam performance series, he also heads the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with his brother, Russell Simmons.
