      • Framed Mid 20th C. Silsby Painting - "Clam Diggers"
        Jan. 10, 2019

Framed Mid 20th C. Silsby Painting - "Clam Diggers"

        Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Clifford F. Silsby (American, 1896-1986). "The Clam Diggers", ca. mid 20th century CE. Signature on inscription on verso - "To Mac and Edie / Christmas 1965 / (signature) Clifford Silsby". A stunning painting created by Clifford Silsby in his signature California Impressionist style. He captures the essence of the scene with loose brushwork and lively palette knife impasto. Silsby conjures an almost magical sense of spontaneity and softly conveys the forms, an emphasis on light effects, and an embrace of pure saturated colors rather than neutral hues. In addition, the composition is fabulous; note how Silsby invites the viewer to trace a sinuous trail from clam digger to clam digger - from the gent in the right foreground all the way to those wading in the waters of the mid-ground. Above is a wide open sky with the sun beaming, its light dappling throughout the azure blue skies. Set in a gorgeous gilded wooden frame with lovely carved details as shown. Size: 19" W x 15" H (48.3 cm x 38.1 cm); 28.875" W x 24.625" H (73.3 cm x 62.5 cm) including frame Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Silsby ventured abroad to study at the Academie Julian and the Ecoles des Beaux Art in Paris, France. He studied with Jules Pages, Lucien Simon, Royer, Laurens, and Deschenaud. His adoptive father, Wilson Silsby, was an artist as well. The younger Silsby was successful as a special effects artist with the Hollywood studios from 1925 until 1962; he was also a member of the Motion Pictures Artists & Illustrators Society. Silsby's exhibition history: Salon d'Automne (Paris), 1923; Calif. PM, 1929, 1930, 1936; GGIE, 1939; LACMA, 1926, 1959; Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1929-43; Oakland Art Gallery, 1935, 1944; San Diego FA Society, 1940; Santa Cruz Art League, 1936; Maxwell Gallery (SF) 1954-62. Silsby's works have been collected by LACMA; Victoria & Albert Museum (London); Evansville (IN) Museum. Silsby's works have been published in Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" (1989) and Nancy Moure's "Southern California Artists: 1890-1940" (1979). Inscription on backing reads, "To Mac and Edie / Christmas 1965 / (signature) Clifford Silsby".
