      Sewell Sillman, American (1924-1992), I-S #1, 1968, screenprint, ed. 16/50

      Est: $500 - $700

Sewell Sillman American, (1924-1992) I-S #1, 1968 screenprint, ed. 16/50 signed, dated, titled, and numbered in pencil lower margin, framed. Sewell Sillmann came from Savannah, Georgia, before moving on to earn his BFA and MFA at Yale University. There he became a faculty member and taught printing and color theory; he also taught at various big-name American institutions including the Carnegie Institute of Technology, RISD, Penn, Parsons, SYNY Purchase, and Ohio State. He founded a printing company with a colleague, Norman Ives, called Ives-Sillman, Inc. in 1958, and together they published a seminal thesis on color theory entitled _Interaction of Color_. Alongside his printing for others, Sillmann worked as a painter and printer of his own works that have been collected by MOMA and The Whitney Museum. This extraordinarily visually pleasing screenprint created in two shades of greens on a double-layered pastel two-toned pink background features two zigzagged and parallel/ mostly horizontal striped line forms (made of smaller striped lines placed on different angles). This wonderful four-color 1960s print in an abstract fashion also somewhat mirrors the artist's own initials. It was printed in New Haven, CT, and is proof of Sillmann's mastery of color.
