Eris Silke Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1947 -

Eris Silke was born in Hungary and grew up in Israel. She’s a self-taught artist, and has been painting since the age of five. She obtained a psychology degree from Witswaterstrand University (Johannesburg), and then moved to Cape Town. She has been practicing as a professional artist for forty years.

“It’s never been easy to meaningfully connect with people. My paintings are my way of expressing myself. Expressing the ‘real’ me.”

Silke has had over 30 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in South Africa, mainly with Die Kunskamer Gallery, Cape Town, directed by the late art dealer, Louis Shachat. Other galleries in Cape Town include: The Association For Visual Arts (AVA), Casa Labia Art Gallery, Burr & Muir Antiques & Art& The Irma Stern Museum. In Johannesburg, Silke has exhibited The Goodman Gallery, The Everard Read Gallery, as well as Graham Britz’s Fine Arts Gallery.

“My inner landscape is often dark and inaccessible to those less introverted than myself. Still, I can not deny myself to compromise on the level of my inner authenticity – in regard to my Art.”

Silke’s works have sold widely in SA and abroad and are prized possessions in Chase Manhattan Bank (New York) and in private collections in Australia and Israel. In South Africa, Silke’s work form part of permanent collections in The South African National Gallery, the Irma Stern Museum as well as in many private collections. Many of her Solo exhibitions have been complete sell outs.

“I’d like to pay tribute to some of the deeply observant art critics and journalists who, to my great relief, were able to ‘decipher’ the artistically private hieroglyphics of my paintings (over the years). It has been a great feeling to be understood for a change! Thank you!!
