Condition A-: small repaired pin holes in corners at edges; minor restoration over abrasions in image; slightly attenuated. Framed. Silas, best remembered as a painter, fought at Gallipoli in the First World War. During that time he did a lot of sketching, which he subsequently turned into paintings. He also designed posters for British railway companies and several shipping lines. Furness Vol. 6, p. 205.

Silas (Ellis Luciano, British artist, served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, 1855-1972) Collection of over 150 original studies, sketches, and preliminary drawings, many if not all from the artist's studio collection, including studies and views in London, architectural interiors, architectural details, sketches of mechanical parts, ships, figure studies, genre subjects, and many others, mainly pencil on various papers, some black chalk, a few worked with brush and ink, watercolour and coloured chalks, various sizes between 120 x 60 mm (4 3/4 x 2 1/34 in) and 430 x 320 mm (17 x 12 1/2 in), some handling creases, old folds, minor surface dirt, but generally without other issues, all unframed, presented in modern portfolio, mainly mid-20th century (c.150) ⁂ Silas originally studied under Walter Sickert (1860-1942), and later sailed to Australia in 1907. The majority of present group appear to have been undertaken on the artist's return to Britain after 1925. However, of particular note are five drawings done in Papua New Guinea, where he spent three years after WWI.

ELLIS SILAS (1885-1972) 'The patriot' Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left: ELLIS SILAS / 1914 Indistinctly inscribed to the reverse of the canvas 94 x 72cm PROVENANCE: Galerie d'Art (Barry Garside), Perth, WA, 1979 (with the present title), sold to Hylton Grimmer Sold from the Estate of Hylton Grimmer, Leonard Joel, Decorative Arts, 8 August 2022, lot 210 OTHER NOTES: In juxtaposing a fit, strong working man with the recruiting poster on the wall behind him, Silas here represents a prominent theme in the early stages of the First World War: the need for the Allies' working men to become fighting men. Comparison with photographs of Silas suggests that this is a self-portrait. Silas, who is known to have been patriotic, joined the Australian Imperial Force in October 1914, the year this work was painted. If this is a self-portrait, it seems likely to be associated with that event. The poster depicted appears to be French (the word ‘patria' – mostly commonly seen in this context in the phrase, ‘pro patria', ‘for one's country' – being spelled here in French, ‘patrie'), suggesting that Silas, like many others, was moved to action by the fate of Belgium and France in August and September 1914. Some months later, Silas was amongst those who went ashore at Gallipoli early in the morning of 25 April, 1915, following which he became one of the very few artists to paint works depicting the Gallipoli campaign from first-hand experience.

ELLIS SILAS (1885-1972) P&O CRUISES / MEDITERRANEAN NORWAY / BY S.S. RANCHI. Circa 1928. 58 1/2x39 1/2 inches, 148 1/2x100 1/4 cm. Philip Reid, London. Condition B: repaired tears, creases, abrasions and overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. The S.S. Ranchi began yearly cruises to Norway shortly after her launch in 1925. In 1928, this same image appeared as a magazine ad in Punch, which helps us date the poster. Silas, best remembered as a painter, fought at Gallipoli in the First World War. During that time he did a lot of sketching, which he subsequently turned into paintings. He also designed posters for British railway companies and several shipping lines. Here, on the first-class sports deck behind the second funnel, well-dressed cruisers watch a game of "Deck Tennis," a hybrid of volleyball and tennis, played with a rubber ring. The S.S. Ranchi crossed over into popular culture thanks to a cameo appearance in one of the highly regarded Tintin adventures, the Blue Lotus (although she was depicted with three funnels instead of the two she had in reality).

Antique watercolor " Venice street scene" by Ellis Luciano Silas ( 1885-1972), image size 19,75" x 13" He was born in London on July 13, 1885. His father was an artist and designer and his mother an opera singer. He was educated by private tutors before working in his father's studio, where he studied under the well-known artist Walter Sickert. Marine art became his main interest and he painted in English coastal towns. In 1907, he sailed to Australia where he spent time painting in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide before he settled in Perth. Provenance - Single collection of recently deceased James S Horigan who lived in England and owned gallery and later moved to Colorado.
