b. 1899 - d. 1989

Louis Siegriest (California 1899-1989), was born in Oakland, CA in 1899. Siegriest lived in the Bay Area his entire life and was an important figure in the development of modern art in the San Francisco Bay area. Louis Siegriest studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, in Oakland, CA as well as at the California School of Fine Art in San Francisco. As a young man he was involved with the painting group the Society of Six, a group of painters who rebelled against the somber tones prevalent in California art of the time, preferring instead the colorful palette of French fauvists artist. Unlike other members of the Society of Six, Siegriest came from a very affluent family. (Siegriest lived in his family's mansion his entire life, raising his own children there). His son Lundy is also a well known painter from the San Francisco Bay area. Louis taught at the San Francisco Art Students League from 1948 to 1951.

            Est: $100 - $200

LOUIS B. SIEGRIEST (AMERICAN, 1899-1989) WPA NATIVE AMERICAN THEMED PRINTS / POSTERS, LOT OF FIVE, large format chromolithographic prints having been cut down to their current size, featuring Native American themed subjects comprising "Eskimo Mask - Western Alaska"; "Blanket Design of the Haida Indians - Alaska"; "Antelope Hunt from a Navajo Drawing - New Mexico"; "Chippewa Picture Writing - Seneca Mask - Eastern Woodlands"; and "Pomo Indian Basket - California". Circa 1939. Some with badly tattered pieces of glued-on mats. Posters each cut down to roughly 22" x 25". Catalogue Note: Siegriest created the designs for these prints, and others, as part of the advertising campaign for the San Francisco World's Fair / Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939, specifically for its "Indian Court" dedicated to showcasing Native American art. The posters originally were even larger and had a block of text below the illustration which read "INDIAN COURT" and gave the location/information about the Fair itself. They also would have been marked "SIEGRIEST" and "FEDERAL ART PROJECT" along the upper edges; these markings are mostly hidden under the glued-down matting. It seems sometime after the Fair ended, these particular posters were not thrown out but instead heavily cut down/altered to retain only the illustration and its title.

            Indian Court. 1939.

            Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: LOUIS B. SIEGRIEST (1899-1989) SIZE: 25 1/8 x 35 7/8 in./64 x 91.3 cm PRINTER: Federal Art Project, WPA DESCRIPTION: An Eskimo mask, situated just so by Louis B. Siegriest, nearly becomes a work of abstract expressionism in this extraordinary poster for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. This was a kind of "World's Fair" on San Francisco's Treasure Island to inaugurate both the Golden Gate and Oakland Bay bridges, which had opened in recent years. The theme was "Pageant of the Pacific." FDR spoke: "May this, America's World's Fair on the Pacific in 1939, truly serve all nations in symbolizing their destinies, one with every other, through the ages to come." Siegriest produced a portfolio of posters for the event; this is perhaps the most fascinating of them. (Art Deco; Expositions; American)
