G. Sichling, signed and inscribed: "Sichling sc. / Buffon". Very fine portrait of the Count of Buffon. Buffon is wearing a richly embroidered jacket with a stand-up collar, underneath a white shirt with ruffles. He appears dignified and holds the viewer captive with his serious gaze. Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (Montbard 1707 - Paris 1788) was a French naturalist. He became famous for his main work "Allgemeine und spezielle Geschichte der Natur" ( Histoire naturelle générale et particulière), which was published in 36 volumes until his death (originally 50 volumes were planned). From 1739 he was director of the Royal Botanical Gardens under King Louis XV in Paris and was raised by him to the rank of count. Lazarus Gottlieb Sichling (Nuremberg 1812 - Leipzig 1863) was an engraver and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.       Bildnis Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Schwarze Pastellkreide auf Velin. 27,5 x 22,4 cm. Unten links bez. "Nachlass d. Kupferstecher Sichling" sowie unten rechts "G. W. F. Hegel", verso wohl eigenhändig bez. "G.W.F. Hegel / nach dem Gemälde von L. Sebbers (Wasserfarbengemälde) gezeichnet von L. Sichling als Vorlage zum Kupferstich". Der Kupfer- und Stahlstecher Lazarus Sichling arbeitete als Schüler von Samuel Amsler in München und widmete sich der Portraitdarstellung. Das feingearbeitete Pastell mit dem Bildnis des Philosophen Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegels, ebenso wie die vorherige Losnummer 6639 mit dem Bildnis Johann Gottfried Herders, war vermutlich eine Vorarbeit für das in Kupfer gestochene Bildnis, das bei Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig um 1850 erschien und Teil der Serie "Bildnisse berühmter Deutscher" war. Die in Leipzig verlegte und zumeist von Sichling in Stahl gestochene Serie deutscher Geistesgrößen fand weite Verbreitung und dürfte erheblich zu unserer Vorstellung vieler Dichter und Denker der Aufklärung beigetragen haben. Schinkel" -- Der Kupfer- und Stahlstecher Lazarus Sichling arbeitete als Schüler von Amsler in München und widmete sich der Portraitdarstellung. Unser feingearbeitetes Pastell mit dem Antlitz Karl Friedrich Schinkels ist eine Vorarbeit für das in Kupfer gestochene Bildnis, das bei Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig erschien und auf eine 1836 entstandene Vorlage von Franz Krüger zurückgeht.
