Oil on canvas in oval with important period cornucopia frame, canvas measurements: 50 x 40 cm, framed measurements: 90 x 60 cm. Francisco Bayeu (Zaragoza, 1734-Madrid, 1795) began his career in Zaragoza in the workshop of the Bohemian painter Juan Andrés Merklein and in the drawing classes of José Luzán Martínez. Bayeu then returned to his hometown, where he carried out several commissions for churches and convents, including the Aula Dei Charterhouse. Anton Raphael Mengs claimed him in 1762 to help him decorate the New Palace. Thanks to the interventions of Mengs, the Aragonese collaborated in numerous decorative undertakings for the royal sites, which earned him the appointment of chamber painter in 1767. He worked mainly as a fresco painter, and in 1768 he made the one in the vault of the conversation room of the princes of Asturias room decorated with the theme Hercules on Olympus. Bayeu combined his duties at court with different commissions offered by the Zaragoza authorities. He was then entrusted with the decoration of the royal chapel in the palace of Aranjuez. After the departure of Mengs in 1777 to Rome, Francisco Bayeu assumed all the obligations that had been abandoned by the first painter. Bayeu was also responsible for the artistic tasks of the Santa Bárbara Tapestry Factory. He made cardboard models that his brother made and supervised the work of Goya, his brother-in-law since 1773. In 1785, Carlos III entrusted Bayeu and Maella with the restoration of the paintings in the royal collections. GUDRUM SIBBONS (Germany, 1924- England, 2020). "Landscape. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left area. Size: 39 x 50 cm; 56 x 67 cm (frame). Gudrun Sibbons is a German-born British artist best known for her paintings of bucolic landscapes. Her works are largely inspired by the atmospheric style of 17th century Dutch artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael, and regularly feature epic expanses of sky and sun-dappled clouds. Employing a detailed, realistic style, she often includes farmers or fishermen in period costume in her work to give a sense of historical context, such as the peasant family in the oil painting Giving Water to the Shire Horses. Born in 1925 in Annaberg, Germany, Sibbons fled Germany during World War II to England, where he began painting in his spare time. Today, the artist's work can be found in many private collections throughout the UK, including that of the actor Errol Flynn. He lives and works in the UK.

This lot features an original oil on canvas pastoral landscape by Gudrum Sibbons (German b.1925). Born in Germany in 1924, Gudrun Sibbons was a medical student until the war intervened and she fled to England. She had painted since childhood but only began painting seriously during the 1950s and some of her well known early clients included David Niven and Erroll Flynn, helping to make her an instant success. Her work has featured in numerous exhibitions. Gudrun Sibbons has always painted landscapes, working in oils, in a distinctive continental style having been influenced by the Dutch Masters. A typical Gudrun Sibbons scene may contain a marine or coastal or river setting, often with fishing overtones and Dutch backgrounds, sailing boats and colourful figures. Other times it may be a pastoral farming background with haystacks, horses and dogs. Gudrun Sibbons work is full of drama with powerful skies and breathtaking light reminiscent of Turner and can have a powerful emotional, even spiritual impact. It is not surprising that it is widely sought after and features in numerous collections around the world. Now well into her eighties, Gudrun Sibbons lives on the south coast of England.
