      Est: £70,000 - £90,000

SHVARTSMAN, MIKHAIL (1926–1997) Krepost Glavy signed twice with a monogram, inscribed in Cyrillic “Moskva” and dated 1978 and 1987, also further signed twice, once with a monogram, inscribed “Moskva/verkh”, titled twice, numbered “34” and dated on the reverse. Tempera and gesso on board, 107 by 107 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the previous owner. Russian Art, Sotheby’s New York, 16–17 April 2007, lot 518. Important private collection, UK. Literature: I. Shvartsman, D. Gorokhov, E. Barabanov, N. Fedorova (eds), Mikhail Shvartsman, St Petersburg, Palace Editions, 2005, p. 175, illustrated; p. 378, No. 169, illustrated and listed. Krepost Glavy is one of the most celebrated paintings by Mikhail Shvartsman, coming from an important, highly regarded European collection of Russian art. Executed over the course of a whole decade (1978–1987), the composition dramatically represents the artist’s creative quest during a crucial period of his life, as well as the atmosphere of intoxicating intellectual ferment marking the nonconformist environment in which it was produced. Like most of the paintings that Shvartsman called “hieratures” (from the Greek epos, hierós — “sacred”), Krepost Glavy was conceived as an image-sign combination, a figure representing a constant divine presence. Shvartsman saw the mission of his art as lying in messianism, and he thought that the function of his creations was to convey the sacred principle. Therefore, he fashioned his hieratures as a stratification and interaction of numerous biomorphic and mechanistically abstract forms and figures. Forming a complex colour and plastic structure, such compositions were, according to the artist, suggestive of intellectual and spiritual semantic contexts, since they summoned up allusions primarily to icon painting, both because of their names and the gesso and tempera technique used, and because they expressed images and signs of the “other” world that were sacred to the artist. Works by Shvartsman such as Krepost Glavy have come to be a symbolic monument to the creative explorations undertaken by the nonconformist artists of the late 1970s and 1980s, as well as an iconic expression of them.

YAROE OKO [AVID EYE] 100 by 75cm., 39¼; by 29½in. signed and titled in Cyrillic and inscribed 1966-1972 on reverse oil on canvas PROVENANCE The Collection of George Costakis EXHIBITED Thesaloniki, State Museum of Contemporary Art , Soviet Alternative Art 1956 -1988 from the Costakis Collections, 7 June - 10 September, 2006 LITERATURE Ye. Barabanov, I. Shvartsman et al. (Eds.), Mikhail Shvartsman, St. Petersburg: Palace Editions, 2005, Cat. No. 108, pp. 110-111, 371, ill. plate 22 (incorrectly titled Paternal Structure) Maria Tsantsanoglou (Ed.), Soviet Alternative Art (1956-1988) From the Costakis Collections, Athens, 2006, p.155 (illustrated and incorrectly titled Mecca) NOTE During the 1970s several of Russia's non-conformist artists were experimenting with abstraction, and one of the most significant of these was the Jewish-Russian painter Mikhail Shvartsman. Even as early as the 1950s he had set out to devise a coherent system in which to express his personal spiritual experience, a space where his religious thinking could meet with artistic experience. He did not take part in the underground exhibitions of his contemporaries, choosing to work alone and actively eschewed his identity as an artist, preferring instead to be called a 'hierat' a name he took from the Greek word 'heiros', meaning holy or sacred, as well as priest. Shvartsman usually worked in oil on panel, which he would inscribe on the reverse with elaborate Cyrillic calligraphy reminiscent of Old Church Slavonic, perhaps suggesting comparison between his work and the Orthodox religious icon for its role as gateway to the divine. In fact, Shvartsman took pains to discourage such academic interpretation as he viewed his art as a product of genuine personal spiritual experience and therefore saw his works as vehicles for transmitting pure religious experience in the present. The subject matter of his works falls into two main categories, that of geometric abstraction (architectonics) and the heads of mediaeval heralds, whose elongated features resemble masks, or the faces on Greek and Russian icons, such as in the offered lot. Shvartsman's sensitivity to colour is particularly striking. The present lot is typical for its muted palette of violet, brown, green and blue, whose subtle tones resonate and glow. In such works the artist as visionary points us towards a higher state of consciousness, meditation and finally transcendence. The offered lot was acquired directly from the artist by the famous Greek collector of Russian avant-garde and nonconformist art, George Costakis in the 1970s.

MORNING ROAD 102 by 77cm., 40 by 30½in. signed in Cyrillic l.l.; signed and titled in Cyrillic on reverse and dated 1978-87 mixed media on board LITERATURE E. Barabanov, I. Shvartsman et al. (ed.), Mikhail Shvartsman, St.Petersburg: Palace Edition, 2005, ill. No. 157 NOTE Mikhail Shvartsman is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Unofficial art in Russia. He has never been part of the mainstream, rather his paintings have evolved as a conscious rejection of the official subjects of Socialist Realism. Born in Moscow in 1927, Shvartsman graduated from the Moscow School of Art in 1956 with a degree in monumental art. Ten years later he accepted the invitation to head the department of graphic art at the Light Industry Bureau of Designers where he oversaw the production of logos for hundreds of Soviet factories. However, his passion lay elsewhere, in mystical abstract paintings he called 'hieraturas', derived from the Greek word hieros, meaning sacred. In fact, icons influenced the most important elements of Shvartsman's artistic technique from the use of gesso and tempera to the layering of old images over new ones. Shvartsman's unique approach also reflects a myriad of other influences including French Post-Cubist art, the art of Vasily Kandinsky and Michael Vrubel as well as elements of heraldry, and Old Russian wooden fretwork. Stylistically, Morning Road is characterised by wide and light vertical lines and asymmetrical composition, which emphasises the idea of metamorphosis. As Ilya Kabakov commented: The impact of his [Shvartsman's] 'canvases', 'countenances', and 'architectural fantasies' was completely captivating, hypnotising.
