En haut à droite de l'estampe, le nom littéraire de l'acteur Shinsha, est écrit au pinceau. A la suite de la publication de l'ouvrage célèbre de Buncho et Shunsho, Ehon Butai Ogi, les portraits d'acteurs illustrant des éventails sont devenus à la mode. Shibaraku, « attendez un instant ! », est un interlude classique du kabuki, l'un des Juhachi-ban, dans lequel, un héroïque samouraï sauve de l'exécution de jeunes amants innocents. Inventé par Danjuro I, comme partie de la pièce Sankai Nagoya en 1697 et repris ensuite, chaque année, lors des représentations de kaomise. Kaomise, est une représentation de gala donné au kabuki le onzième mois pour inaugurer la saison théâtrale. Juhachi-ban, est le répertoire des dix-huit pièces courtes les plus populaires qu'interprètait la famille des Ichikawa. D'une série présumée de six estampes dont cinq seraient connues, ayant pour sujet Shibaraku. Signé : Shunko ga VERS 1779-1785 Format : hosoban H_31,5 cm L_13,8 cm Provenance : Emile Javal.
