          Henry Merwin Shrady (American, 1871-1922)

          Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Henry Merwin Shrady (American, 1871-1922) Washington at Valley Forge, 1904bronze cast by the Roman Bronze Works, New York the base marked Copyrighted 1904 H.M. Shrady and Roman Bronze Works NY. Height 25 1/2 inches. Property from the Collection of Julester Joy Bennett, Shelbyville, Kentucky Provenance: the artist, Henry Merwin Shrady (1871-1922); to his daughter, Julie Hester Shrady Post (1898-1976); to her daughter, Julester Lina Post Balch (1920-2004); to her niece and great-granddaughter to the artist, Julester Joy Bennett (b. 1960). Henry Merwin Shrady was a mostly self-taught artist who came to prominence during the American sculptural renaissance of the Beaux-Arts period. He developed an interest in equine anatomy and turned his initial studies of movement and musculature into sculptural models of horses and riders. His early animalier bronzes were met with praise and enthusiasm and helped propel him to his success as a monumental sculptor. In 1901, Shrady was invited to enter a competition for an equestrian statue of George Washington at Valley Forge. He won the competition, and the monument was dedicated in 1906 in Brooklyn, New York at the entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge. George Washington at Valley Forge depicts the commander-in-chief, mounted atop his horse, wearing a Continental uniform over which a heavy cloak with deep folds is draped. Washington and his horse lower their heads in unison as they anticipate the gravity of the long and brutal winter ahead for the commander and his troops at Valley Forge. Shrady masterfully captures the somber mood of the moment. The work is elegant and moving. Additional casts of Shrady's George Washington at Valley Forge are included in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Henry M. Flagler Museum, Palm Beach, Florida, and the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma. (For more information, see Henry Merwin Shrady, Biography, National Gallery of Art (nga.gov).

(New York, 1871-1922) George Washington at Valley Forge, lifetime cast circa 1906-1922, after the maquette, signed on top of base "H.M. Shrady", with foundry mark "Roman Bronze Works N-Y-", bronze, 25-1/2 x 23-1/2 x 9 in., mahogany wood plinth, 1 x 23 x 9 in., with matching wood pedestal base with doric columns by Greg Guenther, 38-3/8 x 20 x 9 in. Note: Augustus Saint-Gaudens was impressed with the efforts of his friend and contemporary, Henry Shrady when he asked him to review his work for the monument that was commissioned for the Brooklyn Plaza of the Williamsburg Bridge (now Continental Army Plaza) on September 29, 1906. "I congratulate you on the lines, sentiment and character of the group," he wrote in 1906, "it is admirable from every point of view". Thayer Tolles discusses the Met?s copy of the maquette in her catalog of the American sculptures in the collection which states that there were more than four copies of the maquette made. Additional casts of George Washington at Valley Forge are included in the collections of the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Henry M. Flagler Museum, Palm Beach, Florida, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This cast compares similarly to the one held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The bridle, stirrup, and quality of the details are similar with a slightly different treatment of the reins. Henry Merwin Shrady (1871-1922) Monarch of the Plains, 1899 Bronze with brown patina 13-1/2 inches (34.3 cm) high Inscribed on base: Henry Merwin Shrady / Copyright 1899 / Theodore B. Starr PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York, by 1967; By descent to the present owner, 2008. LITERATURE: L. Taft, The History of American Sculpture, New York, 1924, pp. 483-84; P.J. Broder, Bronzes of the American West, New York, 1974, pp. 241-43, pl. 360, another example illustrated. A self-taught artist, Henry Merwin Shrady ranks among the most important wildlife sculptors in America. With a tremendous understanding of anatomy and clay modeling that he inherited from his father, Shrady abandoned his studies in law and turned his attention toward sketching. He often made trips to the Bronx Zoo, in New York completing various studies of animals, several of which would influence his most iconic sculptures, Monarch of the Plains (Elk Buffalo), executed in 1899, and Bull Moose in 1900. These sketches caught the attention of Theodore B. Starr, an entrepreneur and jeweler, who commissioned and copyrighted bronzes to sell out of his shop. According to the National Gallery of Art, "these were some of the very first American bronzes to be cast by the lost wax method, pioneered in the United States by Riccardo Bertelli at his new firm of Roman Bronze Works in Brooklyn in the late 1880s." Frederic Remington, friend and admirer of Shrady's work, purchased Monarch of the Plains and noted in his diary, "'Buffalo'... best art object I have." (September 29, 1908) Shrady's worked garnered so much attention that he was commissioned to create monumental scale models of Bull Moose and Monarch of the Plains in plaster for the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. In 1902, he was awarded a $250,000 commission to work on the Grant Memorial in Washington, D.C., which took him 20 years to complete. Sadly, Shrady died two weeks prior to the public unveiling of the sculpture, leaving behind his legacy and monumental gift to America. HID01801242017

Sacred White Buffalo Bronze by Henry Melvin Shrady The "Sacred White Buffalo" by Henry Melvin Shrady (American: 1871-1922) is a museum quality bronze. This original bronze of a white buffalo is the most sacred of all animals to the plains Native American tribes. The white buffalo is not an albino buffalo because he has brown eyes and not the pink eyes of an albino buffalo. This standing massive buffalo with his head slightly turned to the left is scratching himself on the tree trunk beside him. The white coat shows the muscular content of this sacred animal and the reverence that the Native Americans have of him. This bronze is similar to the magnificent buffalo that is located at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK. The bronze is signed and dated on the back side: "H.M. SHRADY/1902". The bronze dimensions are 21 inches long by 12 inches wide and 16 inches high. The bronze weighs 60 lbs. Strange that so few ever come to the woods to see how the pine lives and grows and spires, lifting its evergreen arms to the light, - to see its perfect success; but most are content to behold it in the shape of many broad boards brought to market, and deem that its true success! . . . Every creature is better alive than dead, men and moose and pine-trees, and he who understands it aright will rather preserve its life than destroy it (Henry David Thoreau, The Maine Woods, 1864). By the 1870s, only several years after Henry David Thoreau made this eloquent plea for the preservation of the New England woods, the moose population between New York and Maine had dwindled to near extinction. During the seventeenth through early nineteenth centuries, the northeastern moose had provided Native Americans with meat and leather for moccasins and decorative objects. Yet due to over-hunting and deforestation in this region, the moose had become little more than a mythical symbol of the virgin wilderness. The native New Yorker Henry Shrady was certainly aware of ideological power of the moose, in its association with the growing U.S. conservation movement, when he sculpted Bull Moose in 1900. Essentially self-taught as an artist, Shrady had studied law at Columbia University and, on the side, learned animal anatomy in biology classes and on sketching trips to the Zoological Gardens in the Bronx Zoo. Even more remarkable, Bull Moose, with its adept rendering of musculature, fur, and facial features, was one of his very first sculptures, cast in the same year as Empty Saddle and Elk Buffalo. The New York jeweler Theodore B. Starr helped jumpstart Shrady's art career by selling these bronzes in his Fifth Avenue gallery. Bull Moose and Elk Buffalo soon attracted the attention of Karl Bitter, the director of sculpture for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, who hired Shrady to make enlarged plaster versions (9' and 8', respectively) for a bridge at the fairground. Shrady collaborated for six weeks with Bitter at his studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, and completed a total of eight monumental animal sculptures for the project. Shrady spent much of his short career executing large-scale military and equestrian statues, notably the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Nonetheless, his animal bronzes, particularly the lone and proud Bull Moose, remain his most popular and memorable works. Other casts of Bull Moose are featured in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, Louisiana. "According to [Metropolitan] Museum records, Riccardo Bertelli of the Roman Bronze Works viewed this sculpture on September 29, 1939, and said that 'not more than twenty examples of it had been cast'" (T. Tolles, ed., American Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Volume II: A Catalogue of Works by Artists Born Between 1865 and 1885, New York, 2001, p. 545).
