        ROBERT SHORE (1924-2014) "The first meal in space." Published in Jules Verne's Around the Moon, a sequel to From the Earth to the Moon (New York: Limited Editions Club, 1970). Acrylic on masonite. 24 x 16 1/2 inches. Robert Shore was a prolific illustrator renowned for his contributions to magazines such as Esquire, Time, and Fortune. He illustrated Moby Dick and many other novels for the Macmillan Limited Editions series. His illustration for Billy Budd won the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators in 1966. Shore also had a distinguished teaching career, first at Cooper Union and later at New York's School of Visual Arts. His work has been exhibited at prestigious venues including the National Academy, the Detroit Institute of Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian Institution.

This portrait of the legendary country singer was commissioned by Time magazine for the January 19, 1976 cover. The project was abandoned when Chou En-lai, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, passed away and the cover was replaced by a photo of Chou's successor, Teng Hsiao-ping.

Most likely the original used for the illustration in Redbook Magazine, accompanying the article "A Wonderful Week in San Francisco" by Patricia and Ron Deutsch. With framed title pages of magazine with illustration and beginning of article. Each in wood and gold painted frames. Robert Shore studied at the Cranbrook Academy and the Art Students League. In 1967, he was awarded a gold medal at the Society of Illustrators. He has been an instructor at Cooper Union and New York's School of Visual Arts. His work has been exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Fine Arts, the National Academy, and the Smithsonian Institution. MEASUREMENTS: Painting 29-1/2" x 31-1/2". Overall with frame 31" x 33".
