    • FREDERICK WILLIAM JOHN SHORE, 4TH BARON TEIGNMOUTH,  BRITISH 1844-1916-  THE FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE V
      Mar. 29, 2023

FREDERICK WILLIAM JOHN SHORE, 4TH BARON TEIGNMOUTH,  BRITISH 1844-1916-  THE FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE V

      Est: £700 - £900

Frederick William John Shore, 4th Baron Teignmouth,  British 1844-1916-  The first glimpse of the Vale of Kashmir from the tonga road at Baramulla;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'F. SHORE 1892' (lower left), inscribed as titled on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 32.5 x 61.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  London, Grosvenor Gallery, 'Views of India', 31 October-8 November 2019, no.41.  Note:  Frederick William John Shore succeeded his brother as 4th Baron Teignmouth in 1915, the title originally created in 1797 for his grandfather Sir John Shore who was Viceroy of India from 1793 to 1798. Whilst serving as a Major with the Royal Horse Artillery, Shore was based at Sialkot (now Pakistan), regarded as the gateway to Kashmir. He remained at Sialkot until January 1894 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel before returning to England later that year. Shore is recorded as having exhibited views of Gibraltar and Morocco twice at the Royal Academy in 1883 and 1888.  Shore is particularly celebrated for his paintings of the Indian landscape, with the valley of Kashmir repeatedly featuring in the artist's compositions and clearly a great source of interest to him. The present work exhibits his characteristic style, with his focus on the reflections in the river effectively emphasising the vast, still, glassy surface of the water, as it winds through the mountains which fade into the distance.
