KENNETH SHOESMITH (1890-1939). CANADIAN PACIFIC / BEAUTIFUL LAKE LOUISE. 1930. 40x24 inches, 101½x61 cm. S.C. Allen & Co., London.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

KENNETH SHOESMITH (1890-1939) CANADIAN PACIFIC / BEAUTIFUL LAKE LOUISE. 1930. 40x24 inches, 101½x61 cm. S.C. Allen & Co., London. Condition A: minor creases in margins and image. Two women are enjoying the view of Lake Louise and the distant, glacier covered Mount Victoria from a large picture window. Lake Louise came to be known in 1882 when Tom Wilson, an explorer and route finder for the Canadian Pacific Railway, was led there by a member of a local Indian tribe. The area, like many of the towns in the Rockies, owes its original growth and prosperity to tourists brought by the Canadian Pacific. In 1890, the railway built the Chalet Lake Louise, a small hotel near the lake, which was directly connected to the main line station via an abandoned tram line. The hotel (quite possibly the one pictured here) exists today as The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Canadian Pacific 74.

    Cunard Line / Europe-America. ca. 1925.

    Est: $7,000 - $9,000

ARTIST: KENNETH DENTON SHOESMITH (1890-1939) SIZE: 24 3/8 x 39 1/8 in./62 x 99.3 cm PRINTER: Thos. Forman & Sons, Nottingham DESCRIPTION: This image is incredible precisely because it's credible: the Aquitania appears at first to be floating in midair between the two buildings. The effect of unreality is further heightened by the coloring, but such surprising juxtapositions of ship and skyscraper do of course occur in New York, and are indeed among its visual glories. It’s one of the most remarkable of the many fine shipping and travel posters by Britain's Shoesmith. (Art Deco; Travel; Ships)

KENNETH SHOESMITH (1890-1939) ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS / SOUTHERN RAILWAY. 1939. 40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Condition B: entirely-overpainted margins; repaired tears and replaced losses at edges, some into text and image; minor repaired tears, creases and abrasions in image and along vertical fold; text banner insert at bottom. A self-taught artist, Shoesmith served as a cadet aboard the HMS Conway from age 16-18. His time at sea honed his already appreciable artistic skill and he went on to have a fruitful career largely as a marine artist. Primarily, he represented the Royal Mail Line and the Southern Railway, but he also designed posters for the LNER, Canadian Pacific, Cunard and other lines. Here, in one of his non-maritime themed posters, residents and visitors languorously go about their daily activities on the sun-speckled Pantiles - the Georgian colonnade at the center of this resort town in Kent. Shoesmith, in his deft attention to detail, depicts several well-known landmarks, including the Pantiles Clock and the Chalybeate spring.

Royal Mail Line / South America. ca. 1920.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: KENNETH DENTON SHOESMITH (1890-1939) SIZE: 25 x 39 7/8 in./63.5 x 101.4 cm PRINTER: Mendip Press, London DESCRIPTION: A student of Fred Taylor and a sailor by training, Shoesmith was a brilliantly talented English painter, posterist, and decorative artist who died before he was 50. The Royal Mail, a British steamship company serving far-flung locations not on the routes of the major carriers, enlisted his talents for several designs. He accomplished a handful in this stylized sunset aesthetic; this copy in particular is stunning for the brightness of the colors, from the indigo sea to to blood-orange sky, and all the colors reflected in the portholes. (Ships; Travel; By Air, Land, or Sea; Art Deco)

KENNETH D. SHOESMITH (1890-1939) CUNARD LINE / EUROPE - AMERICA / [AQUITANIA.] Circa 1925. 39x24 inches, 99x61 cm. Thomas Forman & Sons, Nottingham. Condition A-: minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds and over small abrasions in margins and image; very slight discoloration in image; repaired pin holes in corners. The Aquitania is seen in the gap between two tall New York City buildings, being pulled out of New York harbor by a host of tugboats. Comparing the length of ocean liners to the height of skyscrapers became a common graphic conceit after the Empire State Building was completed in 1931, but here Shoesmith makes that same kind of comparison by utilizing a creative vantage point. He cleverly unifies the dark foreground with the lighter background via the curl of smoke wafting up from the tugboat. The smoke then echoes the steam emanating from the liner's four funnels and mingles with the poster's title. "One of the differences between the Aquitania and the Lusitania and the Mauretania was that she had one more passenger deck . . . [she] could carry a thousand passengers more than the earlier-built sister ships" (Passenger Ships p. 67). Passenger Ships 40, Weallans p. 96.

Artist: KENNETH DENTON SHOESMITH (1890-1939) Size: 25 x 39 3/4 in./63.5 x 101 cm Mendip Press, London A student of Fred Taylor and a sailor by trianing, Shoesmith was a brilliantly talented English painter, posterist and decorative artist who died before he was 50. The Royal Mail, a British steamship company serving far-flung locations not on the routes of the major carriers, enlisted his talents for several designs. He accomplished a handful in this stylized sunset aesthetic; this copy in particular is particularly stunning for the brightness of the colors, from the indigo sea to to blood-orange sky, and all the colors reflected in the portholes. *Provenance: Gail Chisholm Estate, NYC. Proceeds to be donated to Planned Parenthood of New York. (Ships; Travel)

Artist: KENNETH DENTON SHOESMITH (1890-1939) Size: 27 1/2 x 16 in./89.8 x 40.5 cm It is rare that we are given a night scene in a ship portrait. Here, the red-stacked H.M.S. Mauretania is ablaze with lights in the Cherbourg harbor. Completed in 1907, the liner inaugurated Cunard's first sailing out of the port of Southampton and started calling on Cherbourg in 1911. The most popular ship ever to sail the North Atlantic, she continued cruising until September 26, 1934 when the Queen Mary was launched. "The vintage of ship to which the Mauretania belonged marked the zenith in class, sleekness, décor and clientele (Passenger Liners, p. 50). This is the smaller format, with French text. Condition B+: replaced loses in lower left corner; repaired tears in margins, some affecting image; restoration in upper right margin. Faded. This is one of at least two posters Shoesmith designed for Eastbourne, the seaside resort on England's south coast, seen here including the bandstand (built in 1935) and in the distance the Wish Tower, a relic of the Napoleonic wars. Shoesmith applied the same attention to detail in his cityscapes as he did in his ship portraits.
