AMERICA RELINQUISHES CONTROL OVER THE PANAMA CANAL

        Est: $150 - $250

Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (1902-1991), Carol Stream, Illinois, was an American editorial cartoonist. He won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public. Political Cartoon, 13-1/4" x 16-1/4", signed by the artist, "Shoemaker" and titled "Yes, Let's Take A Long Hard Look!". The illustration shows Castro lurking in the rolled-up Panama Canal Treaty with the "Senate" and a blood hound on the trail. Following the crisis at the Suez Canal in the 1960s, Panama broke off diplomatic ties with the United States. America was concerned that Castro (backed by the Russians) would take control of the canal. On September 7, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed the Panama Canal Treaty and Neutrality Treaty promising to give control of the canal to the Panamanians by the year 2000.
