Kataro Shirayamadani for Rookwood Pottery Dull Finish ewer USA, 1887 glazed and gilt earthenware 9.25 h x 3 dia in (23 x 8 cm) Shirayamadani began working at Rookwood in 1887 and a very few of his earliest pieces bear a circular chop mark, which he quickly abandoned for his familiar vertical kanji mark. One of the only two other examples known to us with the chop mark was Lot 1007 in the Glover Collection, which was auctioned in June 1991. A note on that vase by David Glover himself indicated that Earl Menzel authenticated the chop mark but said it was extremely rare. Impressed manufacturer's mark, date, number, glaze designation and artist's circular chop mark to underside 'Flame mark 333 W7 S'. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
