Antonio Zeno Shindler Bulgarian or Romanian/American, 1813/23-1899 River Landscape--Sunset

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Antonio Zeno Shindler Bulgarian or Romanian/American, 1813/23-1899 River Landscape--Sunset Signed with conjoined initials SZ (ll) Gouache on paper 14 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches Antonio Zeno Shindler fled his native home (there is some question as to whether he was Bulgarian or Romanian), finding his way to Paris to study art. It is not known when he arrived in America but by the mid-19th century he was active in Philadelphia as a drawing instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A tour of the American West in 1870-1871 in the company of the Englishman William Blackmore inspired him to become a dedicated painter of Native American subjects. In the ensuing years until the late 19th century, Shindler worked at the Smithsonian Institution, specializing in ethnographic subjects. He was responsible for printing or taking a large number of photographs of Native Americans exhibited there in 1869. The A. Zeno Shindler American Indian Photograph Collection is housed at the American Philosophical Society. C
