Deckblatt mit sieben großen Sichtfenstern, die den Blick auf das Unterblatt freigeben. - Technikbedingt vereinzelt werkimmanente Quetschfalten und kleine unmerkliche Einrisse im Papier, verso mit kleinen blassgelben Flecken, oben schwache, winzige Montierungsspuren, insgesamt sehr gut und ausgesprochen schön. Prachtvoller, experimenteller und nuancenreicher Druck in kräftigen Farben der formatfüllenden Darstellung. Etching, aquatint and relief printing on wood on two sheets of handmade paper. Signed and numbered. Face sheet with window holes revealing back sheet hinged below. - Due to technique isolated pinch pleats and small, hardly noticeable tears in paper, both immanent to work, verso with small faint-yellow stains, faint, tiny traces from previous mounting at top, all in all very good and impeccably nice. Alan J. Shields (1944-2005) Milan Fog 1984 The large, multi-process composition of layered woodcut and intaglio printed handmade paper with stitching is signed and dated by the artist in pencil lower right edge and titled lower left. The work is numbered 21 from an edition of only 46 multiples created. Alan Shields was raised on a farm in Kansas where he learned sewing and needlework from his mother and sisters. He studied art and theater at Kansas State University from 1963 until 1966 when, on the advice of his art professor John O'Shea, he left university before graduating to pursue his career as an artist in New York. Sheet measures 39.5 x 30 with a framed size of 43 x 33.5 inches. Alan Shields (1944-2005) was an American artist known for his colorful, abstract artworks, including paintings, prints, sculptures, and installations. He was born in Herington, Kansas, and grew up in Kansas and Missouri. Shields studied at Kansas City Art Institute, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1966, and later earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1968. After completing his studies, he moved to New York City and began exhibiting his work in various galleries and museums. Shields' art is characterized by its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and organic forms. He often worked with a variety of materials, including canvas, thread, beads, and paper, and used a range of techniques, such as sewing, weaving, and painting, to create his multi-layered compositions. Throughout his career, Shields' art was exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. He was a recipient of several grants and awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1984 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985. Shields was also a dedicated teacher and taught at several institutions, including the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He was highly respected by his students and peers, and his legacy continues to influence many contemporary artists. Alan Shields passed away in 2005 in Shelter Island, New York. His work can be found in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London.
