      Feb. 27, 2024

John Keyse Sherwin - Smithfield Sharpers or the Countrymen Defrauded, after Thomas Rowlandson

      Est: £100 - £150

John Keyse Sherwin,  British 1751-1790 Smithfield Sharpers or the Countrymen Defrauded, after Thomas Rowlandson;  etching with engraving, 34.2 x 43 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The print depicts a naive young player to the right of the composition, partaking in a game of poker with a group of shifty-looking companions, whilst a woman chalks a score to the back of the scene.  Dorothy M. George notes in her 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum' (VII, 1942) that 'the original was exhibited at the R.A. in 1787, under the title of 'Countryman and Sharpers' (R.A. Catalogue). The card-playing sharper is a portrait of Rowlandson, the country lad is reputed to be J. K. Sherwin; though this seems unlikely, since Sherwin was then thirty-six, the identification is supported by the self-portrait of the engraver.'

K. Sherwin / 1780 The present work is possibly one of the very few drawings by John Kayse Sherwin, engraver to King George III. His drawing technique however is recorded as 'in black and red chalk, and a mixture of colour with crayon, similar to those of Bartolozzi' when his drawing entitled The joys of life was exhibited at the Royal Academy (see Neil Jeffares, The Dictionary of pastellists before 1800, entry Sherwin).

      Jul. 25, 2020

      Hogarth | The Politician

      Est: $300 - $400

A print by John Keyse Sherwin (1751-1790), based on a drawing by London-born printmaker and painter William Hogarth (1697-1764). Hogarth was apprenticed to a silver engraver in about 1714, and later established himself as a print engraver before taking up painting in 1726. Although Hogarth often engraved his work himself, thereby avoiding the expense of paying another artist to undertake the task, this piece was engraved by Sherwin and first published by Hogarth's widow in 1775. State unknown.
