Landscape painter, b. 1868 - d. 1940

Artist Daniel Sherrin was an English landscape painter who started his career painting maritime scenes of clippers and sailing vessels on the high seas. His paintings, largely oils on canvas, often served as illustrations for books, and during WW I he designed recruiting posters for Kitchener's Army.

As an artist, Daniel Sherrin moved from Realism in his maritime paintings to a more Impressionist style in his landscapes. Daniel Sherrin's paintings of landscapes are notable for their high level of detail created with short brush strokes and their defined depth perspective. Gorgeous, many-shaded pastel backgrounds contrast against foregrounds in earthen greens and browns.

Sherrin's work hangs in many British museums, including the Bury Art Museum and the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Claughton. Initially he apparently primarily painted seascapes, but later turned mainly to landscapes.His paintings were sometimes used for book illustrations and engravings and a scene entitled 'In the Highlands' can be seen in 'British Highways and Byways from a Motor Car' by Thomas D. Murphy published in 1908.A picture of Sandringham was commissioned from him by King George V and hangs in Buckingham Palace. The Imperial War Museum in London also have material related to his work on the design of recruiting posters for the First World War. One poster was successful in recruiting over 1000 men which resulted in congratulations from Lord Kitchener.

Richards'. He is best known for his depictions of landscapes, maritime scenes, and the East Anglican countryside. He was successful amongst his contemporaries, and notably enjoyed the patronage of King George V (1865-1936) in a commission to depict the royal estate at Sandringham. The influence of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923) on his style is evident in the present work, with its evocative depiction of golden skies lighting the serene and tranquil landscape below.
