During World War I, posters were an essential way to get information out to the general population. This Original Vintage Poster was designed by John E. Sheridan in 1917 for the World War I U.S. Food Administration. The image shows an abundant crop of fresh produce in the basket in the foreground as well as a background image of soldiers and the American flag. It strongly makes the case that food is like ammunition in its ability to support the troops overseas. Creating and conserving abundant food supplies help the war effort. During the year 1917, President Woodrow Wilson created the U.S. Food Administration which operated in each state. The administration was created to conserve and supply the distribution of food during the war, facilitate transport of food, and retain governmental authority over food through voluntary agreements. There were multiple efforts made during the war to conserve food. Hoover stated that "Food, will win the war." With the support of the Council of Defense and other government organizations, he encouraged homeowners to sign pledges testifying to their efforts to conserve food. This resulted in 'Meatless Mondays', 'Porkless Saturdays' and so forth. The Food administration prevailed by combining patriotism and advertising; they so far as to create their own advertising section. John Emmet Sheridan (1877 - 1948) was an illustrator well known in his lifetime for his cover art for The Saturday Evening Post, his illustrations for Collier's Weekly and Ladies' Home Journal, and his commercial advertisements. He is "credited with the idea of using posters to advertise college sports." Sheridan was a member of the Dutch Treat Club, and a frequent contributor to the program of their annual banquet and show, and was an instructor at New York's School of Visual Arts at the time of its founding. During World War I, he created many patriotic posters in support of the United States' war effort as part of the committee of artists that also included Charles Dana Gibson (creator of the Gibson Girl) and James Montgomery Flagg (creator of the iconic Uncle Sam recruiting poster). This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Artist: JOHN E. SHERIDAN (1880-1948) Size: 20 1/8 x 29 7/8 in./51 x 76 cm American Lithogaphic Co., NY In 1917, the American Library Association established the Library War Service to provide overseas American soldiers with books: one of the great ideas that injected humanity, and a sense of American pride, into the unprecedented carnage of World War I. Between 1917 and 1920, it raised $5 million, erected 36 camp libraries, and distributed 7-10 million books to more than 500 locations – including editions in Braille for blinded veterans. John E. Sheridan, a superb illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Weekly and Ladies' Home Journal, leapt at the chance to support the effort. This poster's date truly symbolizes "A Farewell to Arms": at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918, the Great War's armistice began. (Literary; WWI; Propaganda)

Sunset Press, [San Francisco.] Condition B+: minor creases in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; slight darkening along lower right edge; upper and side margins trimmed. Paper. Sheridan was an illustrator and poster designer who designed several well-known posters during World War I to help the American war effort. He was also a prolific illustrator, and is most highly regarded for his sports images. His work graced the covers of The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's Weekly, and The Ladys' Home Journal. For the November 1903 issue of Sunset, Sheridan illustrated a football story entitled, Celebrity Baldwin, by Edward Felton Wheaton, the heading to which reads, "As are the battles on the gridiron between Harvard and Yale or Princeton and Pennsylvania to eastern residents, so are the Thanksgiving Day struggles between the teams of the University of California and Stanford University to Californians. The state university's colors are blue and gold; Stanford's, cardinal." (Sunset, November 1903, p. 6). This poster has been trimmed of its title, the word "Sunset," which originally appeared at the top of the poster.

Artist: JOHN E. SHERIDAN (1880-1948) Size: 21 1/8 x 29 in./53.6 x 73.8 cm “Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany, [President] Wilson called [Belgian relief director Herbert Hoover] back to Washington. When asked what part food would play in the war, Hoover told the president that ‘second only to military action it was the dominant factor” (Rawls. p. 112). During World War I, the United States Food Administration (now known as the Food and Drug Administration) produced several home front relief posters, reminding nonmilitary citizens of the active role they could play in the conflict with common sense dietary changes. These works all put forth the notion that comestible conservation is just as mighty as combustible ammunition: Sheridan coming straight to the point textually and Britton [see following lot] presenting us with a sumptuously acceptable feast that leaves plenty to feed our boys overseas, as well as our war-torn Allies. “Hoover often wondered about his standing with America’s boys and girls, for he knew that his name was linked to every dreaded vegetable children were made to swallow” (Rawls. p 118).

Sheridan was an illustrator well-known during his lifetime for his Saturday Evening Post cover art, his many patriotic posters done in support of the United States' war effort and his commercial advertisements, most especially for the posters and seasonal style books he produced for the Chicago-based clothier Hart Schaffner & Marx. At the time of his death, Sheridan's New York Times obituary stated that he "was credited with the idea of using posters to advertise college sports." That's clearly the thrust of this "Harvard" promotion, executed as a part of a collegiate promotional series done by Sheridan when he had either just graduated from or was about to graduate from Georgetown University. In fact, judging from the design, one wouldn't know that there was anything happening at the Ivy League institution other than athletics, an activity ardently supported by the student population or pursued with focused intensity by th
