      William Sheppard (VA, 1833-1912), Mischief watercolor and whitening on paper, signed at lower right "W. L. Sheppard," matted and framed under glass. SS 11 x 6 in.; DOA 17 x 12 in. Born in Richmond, William Ludlow Sheppard began his artistic career as an illustrator and designer for tobacco labels. He studied in New York, Paris, and London, before and after his Confederate service in the Richmond Howitzers. After the war he settled in Richmond as a respected artist and illustrator.
