Ernest Howard Shepard Sold at Auction Prices

Illustrator, Cartoonist, b. 1879 - d. 1976

Best remembered for his classic Winnie the Pooh illustrations, Ernest Shepard had a storied career spanning more than 50 years. Born in London in 1879, incidentally just a short distance from Winnie the Pooh author A. A. Milne, the precocious prankster Shepard took to drawing, and at 17 years old, won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1901, the academy was the first to exhibit Ernest Shepard's sketches and paintings.

Throughout his service in World War I, Shepard submitted jokes to Punch, a popular English magazine, and ultimately worked as one of its editors. Ernest Shepard's illustrations demonstrated his considerable skill as a draftsmen; he applied this to his illustrations for another children's classic, The Wind in the Willows. Beautiful and nostalgic, Ernest Shepard's prints cover a wide variety of subjects. Capture the whimsy for yourself with vintage drawings for sale at auction and online.

This watercolour does not appear in Shepard’s manuscript inventory for the exhibition but was obtained directly from the artist at the same time. Shepard’s line drawings were first used to illustrate a new Methuen edition of Wind in the Willows in 1931. In 1959 Methuen published a new Shepard edition with an additional eight colour plates from watercolours by the artist. This watercolour features at the very end of the story in Chapter 12, ‘The Return of Ulysses’, and shows the moment Badger, with Ratty, Mole and Toad behind him, on the threshold and ready to burst in and attack the Weasels in Toad Hall. ‘The Badger drew himself up, took a firm grip of his stick with both paws, glanced round at his comrades, and cried: “The hour is come! Follow me!” And flung the door open wide. My! What a squealing and a squeaking and a screeching filled the air! Well might the terrified weasels dive under the tables and spring madly up at the windows! Well might the ferrets rush wildly for the fireplace and get hopelessly jammed in the chimney! Well might tables and chairs be upset, and glass and china be sent crashing on the floor, in the panic of that terrible moment when the four Heroes strode wrathfully into the room!’

Framed and mounted for the exhibition the picture was priced at 15 guineas. Shepard’s line drawings were first used to illustrate a new Methuen edition of Wind in the Willows in 1931. In 1959 Methuen published a new Shepard edition with an additional eight colour plates from watercolours by the artist. This watercolour of Ratty and Mole in a rowing boat by the reeds in the near foreground and Otter and his young son Portly on the far side of the river. The scene is described in Chapter 7, ‘The Piper at the Gates’, when Mole and Rat reunite the missing Portly with his father. ‘They watched the little animal as he waddled along the path contentedly and with importance; watched him till they saw his muzzle suddenly lift and his waddle break into a clumsy amble as he quickened his pace with shrill whines and wriggles of recognition. Looking up the river, they could see Otter start up, tense and rigid, from out of the shallows where he crouched in dumb patience, and could hear his amazed and joyous bark as he bounded up through the osiers on to the path. Then the Mole, with a strong pull on one oar, swung the boat round and let the full stream bear them down again whither it would, their quest now happily ended.’ The picture was also used as a full-bleed design for the upper panel of the dust jacket of the first edition in 1959, but later replaced with a design featuring all four of the book’s major characters and title lettering. The original watercolour of this latter design, which Shepard described as the cover design in his inventory for the Haslemere exhibition, was sold by Sotheby’s, London, 10 December 2019, lot 252. In the reed bed at the lower edge of the drawing Shepard has added a hand-painted roughly torn strip of paper that sits raised above the lower edge to give extra depth to the picture. This overlaid strip is original and intentional and is clearly visible in the reproductions. This 'trompe l'oeil' paper strip is an integral part of Shepard’s original drawing and is clearly visible in the reproductions.

From the 1970s, she was the selector for the National Book League’s Children’s Books of the Year awards and she later won the Eleanor Farjeon Award for her outstanding contribution to the world of children’s books in 1976. Shepard's illustrations have become artworks in their own right. The present lot depicts the iconic friendship of Pooh and Piglet, walking together as they so often do throughout Milne's books, perhaps in the winter time. Milne fondly inscribed a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh with the following verse: When I am gone, Let Shepard decorate my tomb, And put (if there is room) Two pictures on the stone: Piglet from page a hundred and eleven, And Pooh and Piglet walking (157)… And Peter, thinking that they are my own, Will welcome me to Heaven.

Political E. H. Shepard ("Winnie the Pooh") Famous Illustrator Artist Signed c. 1939 Original Drawn Political Artwork Cartoon titled "Arms And The Woman" President Franklin Roosevelt Fights to Fund the Western Allies ERNEST HOWARD SHEPARD (1879-1976). "Winnie the Pooh" Famous Illustrator, for the series of books by author A.A. Milne, also the Creative Illustration Cartoonist for Punch Magazine from 1921-1953. c. 1939, Original Pencil Political Cartoon Artwork Signed, "E.H. Shepard" at lower left, measuring 8" x 10-3/4" Titled, "Arms And The Woman - Steady on, boys, spare the dame", with PASS-CO Photo Certificate of Authentication, Choice Extremely Fine. Historic Content, being dressed as an American cowboy, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) protects a Woman representing "World Peace", while admonishing his opponents who are firing their guns at him states: "Steady on, boys, spare the dame", as his huge five-gallon hat, representing the "Neutrality Amendment," has just been shot off his head. Franklin Roosevelt prevailed over the American isolationists, and on November 4th, 1939, he signed the Neutrality Act of 1939 into law, allowing for arms trade with belligerent (yet allied) nations (Great Britain and France) on a cash-and-carry basis, thus in effect ending the prior arms embargo. A historical theme truly wonderful, unique political cartoon original Signed "E.H. Shepard" Artwork at lower left within the illustration, that is ready for framing and display. Accompanied by PASS-CO Photo Certificate of Authentication as: "an authentic original illustration signed by Ernest Howard Shepard." After a fierce debate in Congress, in November of 1939, a final Neutrality Act passed. This Act lifted the arms embargo and put all trade with belligerent nations under the terms of "cash-and-carry." The ban on loans remained in effect, and American ships were barred from transporting goods to belligerent ports. In the spring of 1939, as Germany, Japan, and Italy pursued militaristic policies, President Roosevelt wanted more flexibility to meet the Fascist challenge. FDR suggested amending the Act to allow warring nations to purchase munitions if they paid cash, and transported the goods on non-American ships, a policy that favored Britain and France. Initially, this proposal failed, but after Germany invaded Poland in September, Congress passed the Neutrality Act of 1939 ending the munitions embargo on a "cash and carry" basis. The passage of the 1939 Neutrality Act marked the beginning of a congressional shift away from isolationism. Over the next 2 years, Congress took further steps to oppose fascism. One of the most important was the 1941 approval of Lend-Lease, which allowed the United States to transfer arms to nations vital to the national defense.

Arguably, the most memorable and influential of these artists who helped the public visualise Grahame’s story was Ernest Shepard. He provided drawings for the first illustrated edition of 1931 and further full-page illustrations for the 101st edition of 1951, of which the present drawing is a fine example. These full-page drawings were later reissued in full colour for a special printing in 1959 that marked the book’s golden anniversary. Born in St John’s Wood, London, Ernest Shepard reportedly began to draw as soon as he gained the ability to hold a pencil. His father, an architect, instantly saw potential in his son and enrolled him at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, Chelsea, in 1897. After a year, at the age of 18, Shepard attended the Royal Academy Schools and in 1899 he won the Landseer scholarship followed by a British Institute prize in 1900. In the years that followed, Shepard began working as an illustrator on publications of works such as Tom Brown’s Schooldays by Thomas Hughes, David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Henry Esmond by W.M. Thackeray, Aesop’s Fables, and Smouldering Fires by Evelyn Everett-Green. Also, to his delight, he had two satirical cartoons featured in an issue of Punch in 1907. However, the outbreak of WWI interrupted Shepard’s career, and he enlisted in the Royal Artillery where he was assigned to an intelligence section that sketched the combat area from their battery positions. Shepard’s service was notable and while a Second Lieutenant, acting as Captain, he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery at the Battle of Passchendaele. His citation read: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As forward Observation Officer he continued to observe and send back valuable information, in spite of heavy shell and machine gun fire. His courage and coolness were conspicuous.’ On returning to London, the then editor of Punch, Sir Owen Seaman, offered Shepard a full-time position and he was invited to join the ‘Punch table’ in 1921. While working at Punch, a conversation with another Punch table member E.V. Lucas and A.A. Milne led Shepard to illustrate some children’s verses of Milne’s that Punch was publishing. These illustrations became the nucleus for When We Were Very Young (1924), Now We Are Six (1927), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and House at Pooh Corner (1928). Arguably, these illustrations led to the Winnie-the-Pooh books’ popularity and made Shepard one of the most sought-after children’s illustrators of his day. Following his success, Shepard was asked by Kenneth Grahame to illustrate the 1931 edition of the hugely popular The Wind in The Willows. Shepard remembered his first meeting with Grahame at Church Cottage, Pangbourne, Berkshire fondly. He reportedly said of his characters to Shepard, ‘I love these little people, be kind to them’ (see Carolyn Hares-Stryker, The Illustrations of the Wind in the Willows 1908-2008, 2009, p. 14) and described the local meadows, rivers, and woods where he had drawn inspiration for his story. Shepard set off to sketch the places Grahame had described and these formed the basis of Shepard’s vision of Grahame’s text. Shepard recalled his final meeting with Grahame before his death in 1932, ‘I went to his home and was able to show him some of the results of my work, though critical, he seemed pleased and, chuckling, said, ‘I’m glad you’ve made them real’ (ibid, p. 14). Shepard gained considerable recognition as an illustrator during his lifetime and witnessed the rapid escalation in prices for his work. In spite of this, Shepard was said to be very modest and towards the end of his life donated a considerable number of his drawings to the V&A so that they could be enjoyed by future generations. 39 X 34.5cm framed
